Sony Outlines Xperia Smartphones Eligible For Android 7.0 Nougat Update

Sony announced back at the end of August that it was working on Android 7.0 Nougat software updates for several of its Xperia handsets and it has been a waiting game ever since. For Xperia XZ and Xperia X Performance owners, the wait is over—Sony has begun rolling out Nougat to those handsets while reiterating plans to bring the newest version of Google's mobile operating system to a collection of other phones, too.

Android 7.0 Nougat for Xperia

If you own an Xperia XZ or Xperia X Performance handset but aren't seeing the Nougat update yet, hang tight, it's coming. Sony says the rollout is happening in phases so not every Xperia XZ and Xperia X Performance owner will receive Nougat at the same time. In the meantime, Sony suggests checking with your local wireless carrier, keeping an eye out for the update notification, and following its Twitter account @SonyMobileNews.

As for other handsets that will see an upgrade to Nougat, Sony said it is planning to dish up software updates to the following:
  • Xepria X3+
  • Xperia Z4 Tablet
  • Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact, and Z5 Premium
  • Xperia X and X Compact
  • Xperia XA and XA Ultra

Android 7.0 Nougat introduces a bunch of new features and upgrades. In addition, Sony has baked in some of its own customizations, including a smarter and more personal Xperia home screen. In addition, the Xperia X Performance gains new manual focus and shutter controls.

Everyone upgrading to Nougat should benefit from improved battery life thanks to some optimizations Google made. Other notable feature upgrades include multi-window support that makes multitasking easier, new emojis, and redesigned notifications, to name just a few.
