GoPros Run For Cover As Polaroid Cube+ Ships With Wi-Fi, Android And iOS Apps, Image Stabilization

Many adventure types who like to record their stunts turn to GoPro, a name that's become synonymous with action videos. However, there's rising competition in the field. Count Polaroid among the ones looking to take market share away from GoPro, which it plans to do with its Cube+, a next generation lifestyle action camera that was first introduced at CE Week last month.

The Cube+ retains the original Cube's 35mm cube-shaped form factor. Also like the original, the Cube+ comes in "fun colors" with optional accessories. One thing that's unique about the Cube and Cube+ is that presence of an integrated magnet -- this lets users stick them to most ferrous metal objects without any special tools.

Polaroid added a handful of new features to the Cube+, including Wi-Fi connectivity, image stabilization, enhanced low-light performance, and increased memory capacity -- you can record your awesome stunts and adventures with up to a 64GB microSD card. The Cube+ supports recording Full HD 1080p video at 60 frames per second, along with 8-megapixel still image shooting.

Another neat thing about the Cube+ is its compatibility with mobile devices. Specifically, it works with Android and iOS phones and tablets via the Polaroid Cube+ app. Using the free app, users can sync the camera with their mobile device to capture and share videos from just about anywhere. This function eliminates the need to track down a computer. In addition, Cube+ owners can use the app as a remote viewfinder to frame the perfect shot, as well as control settings, start/stop recording, capture stills, edit, save, print, and share.

"We knew we had to take an entirely different approach when we introduced the Polaroid Cube," said Scott W. Hardy, President and CEO of Polaroid. "The action camera category was - and still is - a crowded space, so the ability to differentiate while adhering to the core values of our brand was paramount. The Polaroid Cube is a fun, easy-to-use, affordable lifestyle-centric action camera that immediately struck a chord with consumers around the world. We’re excited to grow the Polaroid Cube family with the introduction of the Wi-Fi enabled model and to open up pre-orders today for those consumers who are eager to be first in line when it ships this summer."

You can pre-order the Cube+ from Polaroid's website for $150 and receive a free waterproof case. Models will ship out at the end of August.
