Even though ATI's RADEON 9100 platform is reportedly pre-production, it does exceptionally well versus Intel's integrated graphics solution.  The RADEON's AGP interface is still being qualified, according to representatives from ATI, so we'll leave coverage of that component until a later date.  The notable result here is the performance discrepancy between the RADEON's onboard graphics and that of the 865G.

Synthetic DirectX 9 Gaming

By no means is 837 an impressive score in 3D Mark 2003, but compared to Intel's score of 125, ATI demonstrates that DirectX 8.1 compliance can be invaluable in an application that requires it.  Intel's 865G score is so low because the chipset only completes the first test.  The RADEON 9100 IGP, on the other hand, finishes three out of the four tests that comprise 3D Mark 2003.

More Synthetic Action - DirectX 8

The 865G platform performs significantly better in the older, synthetic application thanks to less intensive use of hardware shaders, but ATI's RADEON 9100 IGP is still decidedly victorious.  In the future, as games incorporate more advanced graphics that reach beyond what the lackluster 865G can handle, the performance gap between these two products should correspondingly widen.
