XYZ Printing Hopes To Dent Market With Inexpensive da Vinci 3D Printer
While MakerBot brought some pricey 3D printers to CES, another company is looking to undercut such offerings with a $499 3D printer called the da Vinci.
"da Vinci is the ultimate 3D printer for consumers and entrepreneurs because it's easier and safer to use than anything else out there," said Simon Shen, the chairman of XYZprinting, Inc. in a press release. "With da Vinci we are moving 3D printing to the mainstream market by satisfying a need in the consumer and SMB segment for a 3D printer that delivers on affordability and usability."

The latter part of that statement is true; whether da Vinci delivers is up for debate.
The da Vinci, built with fused filament fabrication (FFF) technology, sports a build volume of 7.8 x 7.8 x 7.8 inches and boasts plug-and-play capabilities out of the box with the promise of zero assembly or adjustments to make. The print area is enclosed. You can opt for 12 different colors for filament, and the cartridges are easily refillable by average users. You can grab 3D models to print from an open-source cloud database.

Although da Vinci is painted as somewhat of a little guy looking to crack open the market, it’s worth noting that it’s owned by a large company called the New Kinpo Group, so it’s not like the da Vinci is a garage-based operation or anything. Still, it’s good to see 3D printers entering the market at such a wide variety of price points.
The da Vinci will begin shipping in March.
