SanDisk Drops USB-C Bombshell With Wicked Fast 1.92TB Extreme 900 SSD

If you're building a new system with all the fancy newfangled technology that's available, then there's a good chance you'll be rocking a USB Type-C connector. And if that's the case, SanDisk has a portable storage solution that may be of interest -- the Extreme 900 Portable SSD, a pocket-sized drive with a generous 1.92TB of storage capacity.

SanDisk claims the Extreme 900 is the world's highest-performing, next-generation portable SSD. We prefer hard numbers to blanket claims, and on that front, SanDisk rates the Extreme 900 as being able to transfer data at up to 850MB/s. That kind of performance will come in handy when dealing with large files, such as those that accompany 4K video and high-resolution photography.

The Extreme 900 comes housed in a compact and durable aluminum case. If you don't have a USB Type-C port, don't fret -- it comes with a cable for both the new generation standard and USB Type-A, the latter of which is what most USB connectors look like today.

For lesser needs (and budgets), SanDisk also announced the Extreme 500 Portable SSD. It's less than half the size of a smartphone and delivers four times the speed of a portable hard drive, SanDisk says. That equates to transfer speeds of up to 415MB/s.

Both are compelling products for the 4K era, depending on your budget. The SanDisk Extreme 500 will be available in 120GB ($100), 240GB ($150), and 480GB ($240) capacities; the SanDisk Extreme 900 will be available in 480GB ($400), 960GB ($600), and 1.92TB ($1,000) capacities.
