Motorola Confirms Razr Folding Phone Delay Due To Immense Demand

It appears that Motorola may have a potential hit on its hands with the upcoming Razr smartphone. The new Razr represents a new take on the nascent folding smartphone market with a portrait-style display and a horizontal hinge.

Motorola has now announced that it has to delay both the start of pre-orders and when the device will actually launch. The company had previously stated that pre-orders would commence on the day after Christmas (December 26th), with an official launch to occur in January. The company issued the following statement about the status of the smartphone's arrival:

Since its announcement in November, the new Motorola razr has received unparalleled excitement and interest from consumers. Demand has been high, and as a result, has quickly outgrown supply predictions.

Motorola has decided to adjust razr’s presale and launch timing to better meet consumer demand. We are working to determine the appropriate quantity and schedule to ensure that more consumers have access to razr at launch.

We do not anticipate a significant shift from our original availability timeline.

At least potential customers can rest assured that the delay won't be too lengthy while Motorola gets a handle on the supply chain and production schedule for the Razr.

The reimagined Motorola Razr features a 6.2-inch 2142x876 folding display, which is augmented by a 2.7-inch 800x600 "Quick Display" that is accessible when the smartphone is folded closed. Despite the fact that the device retails for $1,499 (which is clearly in ultra-flagship territory), it will come with mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC and "just" 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. In addition, the Razr will unfortunately only be available as a Verizon exclusive.
