Microsoft Unveils Lara’s Next Adventure In Shadow Of The Tomb Raider Trailer

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

It's often said that 'hell hath no fury like a woman scorned', and guess what? Lara Croft is looking pretty damn scorned in a new extended trailer by Square Enix showcasing her next adventure, Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The Tomb Raider protagonist has always been a badass, of course, but Shadow of the Tomb Raider takes on a decidedly darker and grittier tone than previous installments.

The nearly 3-minute trailer wraps up with Lara Croft wondering, "What will I become?," a question that comes just after a series of stealthy assassinations in the jungle as she creeps through the shadows.

"In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Lara Croft must master a deadly jungle, overcome terrifying tombs, and persevere through her darkest hour. As she races to save the world from a Maya apocalypse, Lara will be forged into the Tomb Raider she is destined to be," Square Enix explains in the video's description.

Square Enix says Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the "climatic finale" of Lara Croft's origin story. In other words, this is not the Tomb Raider series coming to an end. Far from it, we imagine. Instead, it is the "end of the beginning" and the last of the rebooted trilogy. It's hard to imagine Tomb Raider going away for good, so perhaps after Shadow of the Tomb Raider, we'll see an older Lara Croft in a brand new set of adventures.

That's getting a bit ahead of things, however. In the near future, Lara Croft will wade through a dense jungle as she battles the evil Trinity organization in South America. It's a race against time, though the trailer also suggests that Lara Croft will battle her internal demons along the way.

The game is being developed by Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics. It comes on September 14 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows PCs. You can pre-order a copy now, which comes with 48 hours of early access.
