Lumoid Launches Try-Before-You-Buy Rentals For Fitness Trackers

The emerging wearables category is one that is fast changing and, quite frankly, a bit confusing if you haven't been paying attention to every little development. And honestly, who has time for that? Unfortunately, these devices aren't cheap, so if you want to make the jump, you're almost taking a leap of faith that your choice will pan out. Alternately, you could take advantage of a new try-before-you-buy program.

Enter Lumoid and its new wearables rental service. The way it works is rather simple -- you select up to five devices from Lumoid's website that you're interested in trying out, and you'll get 7 days to evaluate them all. If you like one (or more), you can pay the retail the price for it, then send them all back. Lumoid will then send you a brand new version of the one you selected and paid for. Sure, it would be easier to just keep the one you selected, but then you'd end up paying for a used device.

There is a caveat to the trial, though it's a bit of a small one -- if you end up disliking all five devices and decide not to make a purchase you'll have to fork over $20. In that way, it's not a free trial, though it probably will prove an efficient way to weed out curious folks who have no intention of buying a device, and focusing on serious buyers instead.

By our count, there are 16 different wearables to choose from, broken up into three categories (with some overlap). They include Sleep Tracking Devices (items like the Garmin Vivofit, Fitbit Charge, Jawbone UP24, and more), Fitness Devices (Pebble Smartwatch, Nike+ iPod Sensor, Striiv Fusion, and more), and Stay Connected (Basis Peak, Samsung Gear Fit, and more).
