Insignia NS-HD01 Is First-Ever Portable HD Radio

It may not be the first portable HD Radio player announced (that honor would arguably go to Microsoft's not-yet-available Zune HD), but it certainly is the first portable HD Radio player that you can purchase. Starting today, gym rats and portable music lovers alike can finally get their taste of HD Radio on the go with the Insignia NS-HD01.

On sale exclusively at Best Buy, the "first ever portable HD Radio" gives users the ability to hear crystal clear, supercharged FM radio for free, and there's even a full-color LCD to help them navigate the menus and channels. As expected, there's a built-in, rechargeable battery, an armband and a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack. There's also room for up to ten user-selectable preset memory channels, and with up to ten hours of play back time, you should be able to run your half marathon without ever needing a recharge. As for charging, the bundled USB cable handles that.

The MSRP is $49.99 and it's available for purchase today, though we have to wonder just how big of a hit this will be. Are users really anxious to hand over $50 for a media player that cannot play MP3 files? With basic MP3 players selling for $50 or even less, we're guessing that most folks will choose an MP3 player over a glorified FM radio (HD Radio, if we're being proper) player. Maybe if the price point comes down, it'll seem like an easier sell.
