Obsidian's The Outer Worlds Looks Like A 'Fallout' Style Sci-Fi RPG Set In Space

The Outer Worlds

Obsidian Entertainment announced that it has a new game titled "The Outer Worlds" that is slated to launch in 2019. This comes shortly after Microsoft's acquisition of the game developer, and the two companies appear to want to capitalize on Bethesda's recent difficulties with Fallout 76.

A two-minute trailer released by Obsidian gives us our first look at The Outer Worlds universe. The world looks unique in many ways, and there's an unmistakable air of humor throughout the trailer, but what's probably more surprising is the extent to which the game looks like Fallout. Obsidian was the driving force behind Fallout: New Vegas, and the company also has some game designers on hand that were involved in creating the original Fallout game, which Obsidian is quick to point out.

With a strong connection to the Fallout series, it wouldn't be surprising for some gameplay elements seen in the Fallout series to be re-introduced in The Outer Worlds. It's also notable that The Outer Worlds shares a similar artistic style to Fallout. Everything in general looks cleaner and more polished in The Outer Worlds, as there presumably hasn't been a nuclear war and two-hundred years of rust in The Outer Worlds.

Long-time fans of the Fallout series that were disappointed by Fallout 76 will likely be overjoyed to hear that The Outer Worlds will be a traditional single-player RPG. It's unclear at this time if the game will have any multiplayer features at all, and it's possible that Obsidian may add a few, but it's clear that the focus will be on completing the game by yourself. As the Fallout series has come on hard times, this may be a strong opportunity for Obsidian to steal some fans away from Bethesda.

The Outer Worlds will be available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, and it is set to release sometime in 2019.
