New Versions of CPU-Z and GPU-Z Released
Hardcore PC enthusiasts who try to squeeze every possible MHz out of their systems by overclocking and swapping out core system components need to have access to tools that deliver precise information about those components--especially the respective speeds those components are running at. Two such tools that have long-assisted overclockers and benchmarkers are CPU-Z and GPU-Z--both are free applications that run on Windows machines. CPU-Z gathers information about your system's CPU, motherboad, and memory. GPU-Z gathers information about your system's video cards and GPUs.
The problem is, with new hardware coming out all the time, it can prove difficult keeping the software in step with hardware advances--the apps need to be coded to specifically support new components. Luckily, new versions of both CPU-Z and GPU-Z have just been released.
Version 1.49 of CPU-Z was released on December 4. It adds support for AMD Phenon II processors and the latest Intel Core 2 models, as well as now taking less time to load. (Support for Intel Core i7 and Intel Atom processors have already been built into previous versions.) This latest version also now includes an online validation process that permits you to add your CPU-Z results to database, with which you can compare your system's information against that other users are submitting (such as CPU and memory types and speeds). Also recently added is an online CPU-Z Hall of Fame, which tracks the highest CPU overclocking speeds recorded--the current leader is "duck," who managed to get his Intel Pentium 4 631 to 8180.4MHz. Version 0.2.9 of GPU-Z was released on December 3. The changes in this version are as follows:
Curiously, when you go to the v.0.2.9 download page, there is a note at the top of the page that states, "Newer version available: TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.3.0," with a link that takes you to a different page that actually hosts GPU-Z v0.3.0. Apparently the developers managed to sneak in a few fixes in the day or two since version 0.2.9 was released and just slid the new version silently onto the site without any fanfare. Version 0.3.0 includes the following changes:

- Improved VGA BIOS Upload dialog. Drop down lists appropriate for your card will now be fetched from our servers to facilitate the upload process
- Corrected RV610 transistor count
