Netflix Goes Social, Announces Facebook Integration

Netflix on Wednesday announced that its subscribers living in the U.S. can link their streaming account to their Facebook profiles. In doing so, Netflix members can see what their friends and family have watched via new "Friends' Favorites" and "Watched by your friends" rows to Netflix. If you link your account, movies and TV shows will automatically be shared within Netflix, and optionally posted to Facebook.

"There are few better ways to find a movie or TV series you'll love than hearing about it from your friends," said Tom Willerer , vice president of product innovation at Netflix. "Facebook already makes it easy for our international members to connect with friends over TV shows and movies and we're thrilled to now bring this experience to our U.S. members."

Over time, Netflix, hopes to evolve the social integration with new capabilities and will regularly test new features. Some upcoming tests include capabilities to allow members to explicitly share their favorites movies and shows on Facebook and discuss with their friends.

This isn't new territory for Netflix. Social integration has existed for international members for over a year, but only became possible to implement in the U.S. when Congress updated a video sharing law earlier this year, the streaming service said.

The social integration is being rolled out now; all U.S. Netflix members will have access by the end of the week.
