Microsoft to Unveil Next Xbox Console on May 21

Microsoft has begun sending out invitations to members of the media for a press event at its Redmond campus in Washington. The event will kick off at 10:00 AM on May 21, 2013, at which point Microsoft is expected to announce its next generation Xbox game console, lest its invitation is grossly misleading.

"On Tuesday May 21st, we’ll mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV and entertainment. On that day, we’ll be holding a special press event on the Xbox campus and we invite you to join us via the live global stream that will be available on Xbox.com, Xbox Live, and broadcast on Spike TV if you are in the U.S. or Canada," Microsoft announced on its Major Nelson blog. "On that day, we’ll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future."

Microsoft said it will "continue the conversation" at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 19 days later where it will unveil its full lineup of blockbuster titles for the next Xbox (codenamed Durango).

One of the biggest questions gamers want answered is whether or not the next Xbox will require an always-on Internet connection, as has been rumored. It's such a hot topic that a Microsoft Studios employee ultimately lost his job after arguing with fans on Twitter over the concept of always-on appliances. It will also be interesting to see how the hardware compares to Sony's PlayStation 4 console, which was unveiled earlier this year.
