Microsoft Unveils Miracast Compatible Wireless Display Adapter, Pre-Orders For $59.95

An update on the official Windows Blog by Microsoft senior marketing communications manager Brandon LeBlanc unveiled the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter. It is a device that will connect to a monitor, HDTV, or projector with both HDMI and USB connectivity.

Retailing for $59.95, the wireless adapter will allow users to share content but only from Miracast-enabled device. This includes PCs and Tablets that run Windows 8.1 with LeBlanc using a Dell Venue 8 Pro and Lumia 1520 for his demonstrations. In order to use it, the consumer will need to simply plug in the USB and HDMI ends of the adapter into their display of choice and select the correct input on the TV. Once that is done users will then need to pair it with a laptop, tablet, or smartphone and you’ll be able to share what is being shown on the paired device to the screen.

Microsoft’s new wireless adapter could be seen as a competitor to Google’s Chromecast. However, unlike the Chromecast which relies on having access to the internet to retrieve content, Microsoft’s adapter relies on the paired device itself for streaming content.

The Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter is currently available for pre-order in the U.S. and Canada. It will be available in October for $59.95 at Best Buy, Microsoft retail stores, and Microsoft’s online store.
