Matrix Orbital MX6 Series PLED Kit, GeCube X800GT, and more!

I challenge you to a duel! That folks, is AMD's new strategy against Intel. Today AMD has delivered a formal challenge to Intel, wanting a head to head match of each companies dual-core x86 server CPU's. Testing will be done in a public setting, and of course by a third party. That's if Intel accepts the challenge. We've received no reply from Intel yet, but we're hoping for one soon.

AMD Challenges Intel To A Dual-Core Duel

Live Shoot-Out to Focus on Server Workloads and Energy Consumption

SUNNYVALE, CA -- August 23, 2005 -- In the spirit of fair and open competition, AMD (NYSE:AMD) today issued a challenge to Intel to conduct a head-to-head competition of dual-core x86 server processors. AMD's proposed dual-core duel in 2005 would be a live, public performance evaluation between server platforms based on the highest-performing Dual-Core AMD Opteron™ 800 Series or 200 Series processors and the corresponding Intel x86 server processors that are commercially available in volume.

The challenge, issued today in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, San Jose Mercury News and The San Francisco Chronicle, features the world's first x86 dual-core server microprocessor, the Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor, in a boxing ring waiting for the Intel challenger. AMD has challenged Intel to settle the question once and for all—whose x86-based dual-core architecture best meets server customer's needs.

"Since we launched Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors in April 2005, we've won every major industry-standard benchmark for x86 servers. AMD64 dual-core technology provides industry-leading performance, is easy to upgrade and is energy efficient," said Marty Seyer, corporate vice president and general manager, Microprocessor Solutions Sector, AMD. "We are giving our competitor a fair and open opportunity to challenge our clear market leadership in a public setting. A head-to-head match using industry-standard benchmarks will arm customers with the information necessary to determine which company can best meet their computing needs. The gauntlet has been thrown down, it is time to cut through the hype, and demonstrate who the industry's leader in x86 dual-core processing is today."

Should Intel accept AMD's challenge, the duel would take place at a public venue to be announced in the coming weeks, with testing conducted by a neutral, third-party testing lab. Testing would be done using industry-standard server benchmarks most relevant to customers today such as SPECjbb(R) and SPECweb(R) Measurement on energy consumption would also be conducted.

"The unit contains a temperature controlled fan, but even in the 85°F testing environment, the supply was still barley audible over the test systems other fans and drives. The unit feels very sturdy and sports a flashy metallic textured paint job over its aluminum chassis that with its rounded edges gives it a kind of streamlined look. There is also a rear LCD panel for monitoring voltage, watts, and temperature that adds a blue glow to the system."

Matrix Orbital MX6 Series PLED Kit @ Bjorn3D

"After spending some time with Matrix Orbital's MX4 series of Character LCD kits, I nearly leaped out of my socks when word came that their new MX6 series was nearly ready for primetime. Promising higher contrast, lightning response times, and low power draw, Matrix Orbital's new PLED displays are the centerfold of their new lineup. Now that I have thoroughly experienced the MX6 myself, I can certainly say that I am not disappointed."

GeCube X800GT @ TweakTown

"Recently we saw ATI quietly introduce their Radeon X800GT graphics cards into the market which are designed to compete directly against nVidia's mighty mid-range GeForce 6600GT. Today we're looking at GeCube's version of the X800GT which is overclocked a little to match the clock speeds of the 6600GT. Read on as we examine ATI's latest VPU and see how it stands up against nVidia's mid-range hot cake."

MusicMatch Jukebox 10 @ PC Mechanic

"When you first look at the main window of MM, it is a bit daunting. There are buttons on the left for Library, CD, Now Playing, Copy from/to CD and Portable Device. There are also links to their store and radio stations. In the center is your library and the top is dominated by a playlist window, simple player and a large logo."

Asetek VapoChill Micro Ultra Low Noise Heatsink Fan @ PC Perspective

"The Asetek VapoChill Micro Ultra Low Noise heatsink fan offers a good combination of CPU cooling with minimal noise. Even with the fan turned up on High speed, the cooler was relatively quiet and when the speed was turned down low it was virtually silent."
