HP Opens Up TouchSmart

HP recently released its TouchSmart Application Developer Guidelines to third party developers. In doing so, the company is allowing anyone to create touch-friendly applications that will run within the TouchSmart Software suite on popular HP TouchSmart PCs.

As a means of distributing guidelines to developers and providing a way for TouchSmart developers to interact with one another, HP has gotten behind the TouchSmart Community. On the TouchSmart Community, you’ll find a download hub that allows developers to upload and share their creations with TouchSmart owners from a central location.

To jump start the new development initiative, the TouchSmart Community is running a contest that will give one lucky developer a chance demo their software in the HP booth at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Travel expenses will be paid, and the winner will also receive a free 25.5-inch TouchSmart PC, and prominent promotion on TouchSmartCommunity.com for the month of January. Two runners-up will receive a 22-inch TouchSmart PC and prominent promotion on TouchSmartCommunity.com for the month of January. In addition, the runner-up applications will be demoted on TouchSmart PCs at CES 2009 in the HP TouchSmart booth. To participate, download the developer guidelines and start creating finger-friendly ports of your applications. This contest runs through December 5th.

Before installing applications, TouchSmart owners will need to upgrade their TouchSmart Software to the latest version. HP’s Support site offers this upgrade for free. The TouchSmart Downloads page already offers two programs: Proxure's KeepSync software and FreeHand System's Solero Music Viewer.
