Google Maps Gets Buffed-Out With Material Design And Uber Booking Capabilities
Don't be surprised if Google Maps looks totally different the next time you open it up on your Android or iPhone device. Google Maps is getting a facelift with bold colors and textures for a slick new look. Google says the redesign is all about creating surfaces and shadows that echo the real world, along with a material feel that will have layers and buttons more prominently displayed.
Google's essentially revamping the entire Google Maps experience. For example, when you tap on a place's info sheet at the bottom of your screen, an info layer glides up to the top with photos, reviews, and other helpful information. You'll also find a "more to Explore" link at the bottom of the map if you want to try out a new place.
There's also a bit of third-party integration taking place. Let's say you find a restaurant that sounds appealing. Rather than stop by and roll the dice that there will be a table available, you can make a reservation within the Google Maps app for eateries found on OpenTable (only works in the U.S.).
Finally, Google Maps now taps into Uber.
"On a cool winter day, a chilly walk or train ride may not always be the most appealing choice. Travelers deciding whether they should take an Uber or brave the frosty winds can now see estimates for Uber’s pickup time and price for their route in walking and transit directions in Google Maps. This option will appear if you have the Uber app installed, where available," Google says.
The new look Google Maps is being rolled out over the next few days, so if you're not seeing it now, you will soon.
