Futuremark Rounds Up Technology Big Wigs to Develop 3DMark for Android

We're plenty familiar with Futuremark's assortment of benchmarks, as we should be since we feature 3DMark and PCMark in several of our reviews. They're great tools for assessing performance on the Windows platform, but what about the growing number of Android devices? Well, Futuremark's going to cover those, too.

The Finish software company is working on a version of 3DMark specifically for Android-based tablets and smartphones, getting help from some industry heavyweights like Acer, Intel, Qualcomm, and Signtel-Optus, all of which have joined the company's Benchmark Development Program to collaborate and offer input on the new benchmark.

"For more than ten years we have worked with the world's leading PC hardware manufacturers to create 3DMark and PCMark. As a result, Futuremark benchmarks are the industry standard for PC performance measurement used by hundreds of press publications and millions of end-users. As we bring 3DMark to Android, we are excited to expand our cooperation to include Acer, Intel, Qualcomm and SingTel-Optus, technology leaders who will bring unparalleled insight, experience and vision to the development of 3DMark for Android,"Jukka Mäkinen, Futuremark CEO, said in a statement.

3DMark for Android is scheduled to launch sometime later this year. It's being designed to measure game performance using graphics rendering, CPU, and physics tests with real-time graphics that stress OpenGL ES2.0. In addition, Futuremark says the results from 3DMark for Android will be comparable from the new 3DMark for Windows, which is also scheduled to launch later this year (see trailer below).
