Facepalm Moment: Study Finds 11 Percent of Americans Think HTML is a Sexually Transmitted Disease
Not everyone needs to be a geek or even particularly tech savvy, though the latter is a trait that will certainly come in handy time and again. We get it, we all have different interests and what not. At the same time, we're a little taken aback by a new survey indicating that around 1 in 10 Americans (11 percent) think HTML is an STD. Like syphilis.
In case anyone reading this is among the 11 percent, HTML is not a sexually transmitted disease. HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is a programming language used to make websites, and while it can incite anger, rage, and frustration (just like any programming language), it's not something you can catch after an ill advised one night stand, even if you slept with Siri.
Coupon site Vouchercloud.net conducted the study, noting that its user base has a big interest in technology with thousands of monthly visitors looking for tech deals. At the same time, "It seems that quite a few of us need to brush up on our tech definitions," Vouchercloud said in a statement, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Equating HTML to an STD wasn't the only interesting finding. More than 4 out of 10 said they thought a "motherboard" was "the deck of a cruise ship," while 27 percent guessed that "gigabyte" was an insect commonly found in South America. Around 15 percent thought "software" was comfortable clothing.
Looks like we have our work cut out for us, folks.
