Coming to a GPS Device Near You

Soon, your GPS device might be useful for much more than just getting directions and finding the nearest coffee shop. NAVTEQ will become one of the first GPS services to provide flight status information to GPS users. The company is also adding fuel price information to its dynamic content portfolio. Both features are currently available in beta testing and are expected to be commercially available in the first quarter of next year. NAVTEQ already delivers camera alert data and real-time traffic to navigation systems.

The new Air Travel Status feature will provide GPS users with flight arrival and departure information for thousands of U.S. flights. It will also include information about security wait times and weather conditions at hundreds of airports.

Like other dynamic services, NAVTEQ’s Fuel Prices feature will allow you to search for the lowest gas prices at nearby stations and see listings for different types of fuel, including E85 and diesel. The data will be matched to fuel stations on the NAVTEQ maps. NAVTEQ will also allow a “push” feature that will deliver fuel information after a user has driven a certain number of miles or when a fuel gauge reaches a predefined level.

As with its other POI data, NAVTEQ will provide 24 x 7 technical support and delivery of its data. NAVTEQ data is behind many in-vehicle navigation systems sold in North America and Europe today. The company also provides mapping data for Garmin, Magellan, Motorola, Nokia, and many other portable devices.
