Attention iPhoners: Google Getting Its Best Phablet On With Nexus 6 Launch This Month
It's about to be on like Donkey Kong in the phablet space. Following the recent launch of Apple's 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, Google is getting ready to release an even larger handset, one that even King Kong would say is big. It's the Nexus 6, codenamed Shamu (after the whale at SeaWorld) and successor to the 5-inch Nexus 5.
The Nexus 6 will arrive with a 5.9-inch display, the biggest yet from Google (in a smartphone). It's also larger than the iPhone 6 Plus by 0.4 inches and even outsizes Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 by 0.2 inches. However, as we saw when comparing the iPhone 6 Plus to LG's G3, panel size is only part of the equation -- the G3 is noticeably smaller than the iPhone 6 Plus even though both sport 5.5-inch displays.
Motorola is in charge of manufacturing the Nexus 6. Previous rumors suggest it will feature a Quad HD 2560x1440 display (498 pixels per inch), 2.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 32GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, 3,200mAh battery, and Android L.
Is the world ready for a 5.9-inch phone? Well, in 2011, phablets comprised just 1 percent of global smartphone shipments, according to Strategy Analytics. This year they're expected to account for nearly a quarter of all smartphone shipments, so rolling the dice on a large size handset isn't as big of a gamble as it was just a few short years ago.
