Apple Refreshes iMac Lineup With Intel Haswell 4th Generation Core Processors
Apple may be smitten with mobile products like its iPad and fancy new iPhones, but it hasn't completely turned its back on systems. Just the opposite, the Cupertino company today announced that it updated its iMac line with Intel's 4th Generation Core processors (Haswell), new graphics, the latest Wi-Fi technology, and faster PCI-E flash storage options.
"iMac continues to be the example that proves how beautiful, fast and fun a desktop computer can be," said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "Inside its ultra-thin aluminum enclosure, the new iMac has the latest Intel processors, faster graphics, next generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi and faster PCIe flash storage."
The entry-level 21.5-inch iMac starts at $1,299 and comes with an Intel Core i5 quad-core processor clocked at 2.7GHz (3.2GHz via Turbo Boost), 8GB of memory, Intel Iris Pro graphics, and 1TB hard drive (5400 RPM). For $200 more, Apple bumps the processor up to a Core i5 clocked at 2.9GHz (3.6GHz via Turbo Boost) and GPU to NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M graphics with 1GB of onboard memory.
Stepping up the to 27-inch model, the $1,799 configuration includes an Intel Core i5 quad-core chip clocked at 3.2GHz (3.6GHz via Turbo Boost), 8GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M graphics with 1GB of onboard memory, and 1TB hard drive (7200 RPM). Spend $200 more and Apple will upgrade the processor to a Core i5 part clocked at 3.4GHz (3.8GHz via Turbo Boost) and swap the GPU for a GeForce GTX 775M with 2GB of onboard memory.
Upgrades are available in each of the configurations, some of which include more RAM, Fusion Drive or solid state drive storage, faster CPUs, and faster GPUs up to a GeForce GTX 780M with 4GB of onboard memory.
