An 18.4-inch Tablet / All-in-One Combo: ASUS Unveils the Transformer AiO

As the PC and mobile markets continue to evolve and cross-pollinate, plenty of companies are massaging form factors to better suit users’ varied needs. ASUS has been working on that as much as anyone, and its latest design is an all-in-one PC called the Transformer AiO that doubles as both a decently-appointed desktop and a solid tablet.

In desktop mode, the computer features an Intel Core i5-3350P processor, NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M (2GB) graphics, 8GB of DDR3-1600MHz RAM, 1TB HDD, a SuperMulti DVD drive, and a 1MP front-facing webcam. It runs Windows 8 and offers 802.11a/b/g/n dual-band WiFi, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth 4.0, a quartet of USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, headphone and mic jacks, a 3-in-1 memory card slot, and HDMI.

The display is an 18.4 x 11.57-inch (1920x1080) IPS 10-point multi-touch display, which sounds rather small until you realize that the display detaches from the base to become a standalone tablet. (A very, very large tablet, that is.)

The display packs its own set of specs, including the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system, an NVIDIA quad-core Tegra 3 chip, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, 32GB of onboard storage, microSD card slot, dual-band WiFi, a mini-USB 2.0 port, and Bluetooth 3.0 + EDR.

Further, the tablet can be used to control Windows 8 on the desktop portion of the Transformer AiO with Remote Desktop technology. ASUS also included a kickstand so users can enjoy the tablet as a tabletop PC.

The Transformer AiO will be available in North America in Q2 starting at $1,299.
