Amazon Aims For The Living Room Next Week, Could Be Streaming Video Set Top Box
Amazon is holding a press event on April 2nd, and it appears likely that the announcement will be the oft-rumored and long-awaited streaming video set-top box. Or at least, something pertaining to living room entertainment.
The image that Amazon sent along with the invitation is a shot of a couch littered with a few kernels of popcorn. “Please join us for an update on our video business,” reads the tag line. It’s not hard to connect the dots.
Now, what exactly Amazon might unveil for the living room is still a bit of a question mark. It could just be another streaming box like the Roku, Apple TV, or others, but that seems like a relatively uninteresting route already well-traveled by the aforementioned players in that space.

One rumor indicated that instead of a set top box streamer, Amazon was developing something more akin to Google’s Chromecast, a dongle with decidedly un-dongle-like powers.
What’s most likely is that Amazon has bigger plans. The device could be a set-top box or a dongle, but--again, jibing with previous rumors--it may offer streaming video, as well as the ability to run a number of apps, plus streaming game capabilities. That would put Amazon in competition with essentially every other home entertainment player, including bigs like Microsoft and Sony.
Amazon is skilled at disrupting markets; whatever April 2nd holds, it will most likely make a big splash.
