AVG Tops 100 Million Downloads on Google Play, First AV to Break Top Downloads Category

You can debate all day long how much of a threat malware truly poses to Google's Android platform, but if you want to err on the side of caution, there are antivirus solutions available to you. The most popular appears to be AVG's free AV app, which just leapfrogged over 100 million downloads on Google Play. That's an impressive achievement and one that puts the app in the same company as WhatsApp, Skype, Twitter, and others that fall into the 100-500 million downloads club.

Even more impressive than making it into the 100-500 million downloads category is being the only the AV app represented in that particular tier. Clearly Android users feel security is necessary on their smartphone and tablet devices, and so far, they're turning to AVG's free offering more often than any of the alternatives.

"In the last year, mobile has been an area of strategic focus for AVG and as we look ahead to 2014 and beyond, it is clearly going to continue to grow considerably," said David Ferguson, General Manager Consumer & Mobile, AVG Technologies. "We were one of the very first to provide a free security app for Android devices, and now we’re the first company to have an antivirus app in the top downloads category on Google Play. It’s thanks to the strength of our product and our worldwide customer base that we’ve reached this incredible milestone and sit alongside some of the biggest global brands also ranked within this category."

Should you add to AVG's ranks? That's up to you, but according to AVG, mobile malware grew 22 percent in 2013. With 2.5 billion people predicted to come online in the next five years, AVG says threats targeted at mobile devices will only become more prevalent.
