    AOL - Won't connect via wireless ?!

    Hello All,

I recently made a mistake in mentioning to the outlaws that I could change update their desktop so that it would connect wireless. A good 6 hours later I still can't get connected using the wireless !

They are with AOL and have a Netgear DG834G router. I have set this up using the AOL disk to work wireless and created a network name and password...and I'm presuming the password here is later used as the WEP key ? It does register as a wireless network connection but when I try to connect it's getting stuck at the "acquiring network licence" stage and then returns limited or no connectivity. I've played a bit further and found that the wirless card is just picking up a default IP address and does this mean it's not actually speaking to the router properly ?

The pc is running on XP SP2 and I'm just using windows to configure it and not installed the utility software that came with the card.

I'm sure someone must have come across this before or know what to try next, but I'm stuck [:'(]

     Please help !

     Craig

Hi Craig, and welcome to HotHardware. Why haven't you installed your card's software? While some wireless cards use the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration Utility, others do not and will not work properly without the software. If the installation instructions that came with your router are not clear perhaps THIS article will help you (especially the configuration section). As explained in the article, "The simplest way to configure the router is to connect one computer to it using the supplied Ethernet patch lead". The info in that article should be everything you need, but if something is not clear, post again! I do suggest, however, that at first you forget about trying to connect with AOL and just use Internet Explorer instead. Also, use the supplied Ethernet patch lead and hardwire your computer to the router to verify internet connectivity before you install the wireless card software and try to connect wirelessly.
