    upgrade advice

well im going to wait for the new processors to come ou at the end of the year for my new project.

apart from that can anyone advise me what else i can do to upgrade or tweak my system to run alot faster.

not that i need it just getting into the whole custom pc theme.

    this is what ive got

    eVGA 790i ultra sli Motherboard

    2 x 9800GX2 video cards

    Core2 Quad QX9650

    Tagan A380 case

    1200W NSP Modular Power Supply

    4GB DDR3-1600 Corsair XMS3 DHX Series - Cool DDR3
    4GB DDRS-1333 Corsair XMS3 DHX Series - Cool DDR3

    two LiteOn 20X DVD+-RW

    2 150G Raptors (Raid 0) and 2 750G (Raid0)

how about adding 4g or 8gb ready boost, ready boot and ready drive?
changing the primary drive to the new velociraptor?
    what else could i do..
you guys are the experts so any ideas i would appreciate since i cant really get into a new ig till the new processors come out.
so got to mess around with this till then.
you cant get more than 8gb memory kits can you?
    what abbout tweaking vista?
oh by the way i know im not getting my full benchmarks as 3dmark06 dosent really recognise quad sli for my 2 9800gx2 cards but i still get more than the skultrail system that kazoom has. so i guess its not that bad

    Re: upgrade advice

You could add a 4GB ready boost drive... not sure if there will be a noticable difference, however, 4GB memory sticks with readyboost are fairly cheap these days.

Changing your memory from 4GB to 8GB is probably NOT going to be that beneficial. Your ram is fast enough.. and you start losing performance once you start adding more sticks to your mobo.

The velociraptor is a nice drive. I'm not sure whether it will out perform 2 x 150GB Raptors in Raid 0... but it is definately a nice stand-alone drive. If you have money laying around, pick up one and check it out, or pick up 2 and do a Raid 0 :)

I'm not sure about tweaking vista....

Also... 3dmark really doesn't mean *** in my opinion... all nice systems have "high" scores, but they may not represent their actual performance in games relative to each other. Do a crysis benchmark, or see how much FPS you can get in crysis/cod4 with max settings and resolution possible with your monitor.

    Re: upgrade advice

Processors that come out at the end of the year? Are you talking about the Nehalem ones? If so, then no current motherboard will support those processors.

Ready boost is not needed if you have that much memory. It is really only for systems with very low memory.

You can get 2x 2GB sticks so that you have room to upgrade to 8GB total in the future. But I agree with willardcw4, stick with 4GB at most for now.

    Re: upgrade advice

i already have 8gb ddr3 memory in my system.

and yeah talking about the Nehalem processors.

wanna get my hands on them as soon as they come out :)

so nothing else i can do to tweak it up?

    oh well...

might try the 2 velociraptors in raid 0

    cheeers anyway

Like I said earlier, not current motherboards will support the Nehalem processor. That processor will have the memory controller on the die so it won't need the memory controller that is on all current motherboards that support Intel. That means the 790i is not going to support Nehalem. Also, Nehalem will not be socket 775 compatible.

So there is nothing wrong with going with a 790i chipset. But it won't prepare you for Nehalem.

    Edit:

We are talking about 1 system right? You are upgrading all the components you can right now and then buy a Nehalem and stick it in this system? Or do you mean that you will start a whole new project/build when Nehalem comes out?

If you think you can’t do something, you’ll never be able to do it. No matter how easy it is.

    Re: upgrade advice

    lol. no

this is a brand new rig.

i just wanna mess around with it and see what i can get out of it

so if theres anything i could change or add to make it faster/bettter

and in regards to the nehalem processors that are suppose to be coming out

i'll be doing a brand new build/project with that when they are available.and i understand i'll hasve to use all new tech

so that has got nothing to do with my current rig.

so far no suggestions or advice on anything i could possibly do

    Re: upgrade advice

    Oh ok, I understand now.

I guess you can watercool it for overclocking. Or try attaching a thermal electric cooling plate (peltier) to the water cooling for below ambient temps.
