    Re: Gaming Desktop

That is kinda broad... you can build a computer to play all games in high settings... but lag is based on your internet connection and/or distance from the location of the server...

Anyway without a money cap you can basically do anything.. however, these are some components I would go with if you willing to spend about 2 grand (or a few hundred less):

EVGA 132-CK-NF79-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 790i Ultra SLI DDR3 ATX Intel Motherboard ~$350

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188025

     OCZ Platinum 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory ~$290

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227287

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 Yorkfield 2.66GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor ~$360

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115039

    ZALMAN CNPS9700 LED 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler ~$60

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118019

Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ~$130

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021

    CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX ATX12V / EPS12V 750W Power Supply ~$140

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006

    Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s Hard Drive ~$170

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136012

EVGA 512-P3-N877-AR GeForce 9800 GTX SSC 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card ~$360

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130349

     SAMSUNG Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe ~$35

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151154

Thats pretty much about what I would build at the moment.. If you wanted to upgrade your video card solution you can go with 2x 9800GTX or a 9800GX2.

The gear I listed there totals to: ~$1895.

A lot of those items (or similar ones) will go on/off sale, so you gotta kind of watch the market and I would suggest buying your parts over a larger period of time so you can monitor the best deals.

I find that newegg.com and clubit.com are the best for hardware (usually).

Also, you would want vista 64-bit if you go with 4GB of ram. 32-bit operating systems can only see a max of 3.2GB or less.

    Hope this helps!

    Re: Gaming Desktop

Why the 790i SLI it is ovepriced and uses DDR3 which are also overpriced and a small performance increase from the DDR2.

Why the Q9450 how about Q6600 and Q6700 after the price drop?

Why raptor, the seagate is cheaper and almost the same speed.

I was thinking of SLI 8800GTS or 9600GT since they are almost the same perfomance as the 9800GX2.

    Re: Gaming Desktop

If you go with a Q6600 or Q6700, I would go with the 780i. Only reason I would go with the 790i is because it has 1333/1600 MHz FSB compared to other mobos with only 1066/1333 MHz FSB. If you got the Q9450, it is 1333FSB, so you can overclock it A LOT easier on the 790i than 780i. However, if you get a Q6600 or Q6700, they have a FSB of 1066MHz, so you can OC those fairly nicely on a 750i or 780i board.

Then, you can just do DDR2... there are some good 2x1GB and 2x2GB kits at 800MHz and 1066MHz for under $100.

For the HD, I wouldn't even get a 10,000 rpm if ur on a budget...

SLI 8800GTS 512mb cards is a good choice.

I just listed those items because you never offered a performance or price range... you can do a lot.

    Re: Gaming Desktop

I dont want to waste over 2k im sure of that.

Which one will overclock more and better Q6600/Q6700 or the Q9450.

Why did u pikc the 780i how about the 750i?

Does the amount of ram affect overclocking or something?

    I am fine with a 500GB 32MB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s

Yeah but also if I go with 9600GT SLI  save like 100 more bucks

I am also planning to get a laptop for school and gaming in other places so I need to make the rig fast and the best bang for my buck.

Keyboard: Logitech G15 (older model)-- been using it for about 2 years and its been working great.  Has programmable keys (18) which are very useful for the lazy fingers. I play WOW alot and it does a nice job of "quick" recording mini macros.

    Re: Gaming Desktop

Can you provide a budget? It would be easier to answer those questions... For instance, the Q9450 is the best processor of the bunch, but if you don't wanna drop that much go for a Q6600 (since your board you get will most likely not be 1333/1600 FSB).

So here is what I would say

    Case: Midtower, Antec Nine Hundred

    Motherboard:Nvidia 750i

    OS: 64-bit Vista

    Ram: 4GB of 1066MHZ DDR2

Processor: Q6600 (which can OC to about 3.0 GHZ)

Graphics Card: Nvidia. In reality, all you need is ONE 8800GTS 512mb or ONE 9800 GTX... having ONE of those cards will handle 99% of what you can throw at it.

Come back with a price range and it will be easier to help :)

    Re: Gaming Desktop

I did some research and this is what im stuck with:
Motherboard: NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI or 780i SLI
    Memory: 2GB (2x1GB) or 4GB (2x2GB)
GPUs: 9600GT SLI or 8800GTS SLI or 8800GT SLI
    Processor: Q6700 or Q9450

I want to score very good in benchmarking. I will be overclocking everything and pushing it to the limit. I will be buying the components after the price drop of the quad processor.

    Re: Gaming Desktop

im going with the Q6700 not the Q9450 cz of its of multiplier and it will be cheaper.

    Should I get:
Newegg.com - XFX MB-N780-ISH9 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards
    or
Newegg.com - MSI P7N SLI Platinum LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

I still don't know if i should go with 8800GT SLI, 9600GT SLI, 8800GTS SLI
(lowest price after mail and rebate)
    8800GT $160
    9600GT $130
    8800GTS $200

    Re: Gaming Desktop

If money is not an issue, just go with the 780i... Its hard to find a 750i that has 2 or more pci-x slots... if you want SLI, i'd stick with 780i

I'd still stick with the 8800GTS... two of those in SLI will out benchmark/perform a 8800GT SLI OR a 9600GT sli.

    Re: Gaming Desktop

9600GT SLI is the best bang for the buck.  For approximately $300, the performance is untouchable.

8800GT SLI performs a little better, and the 8800GTS 512mb SLI does a little better than that.  But they cost more.  So pick what' within your budget.

You may want to get one 8800GT or one 8800GTS right now, and then add a second in the future when prices are lower.  Either of those cards will be able to handle most anything right now anyway, as long as you aren't greedy in Crysis.  If you go with the one 8800GTS, you may not even feel the need to upgrade for a while anyway.

Imo, go for 9600GT SLI right now.  Just keep in mind in the future when you demand more performance both cards will have to go, obviously.

    Hello
