    Summer build (..hopefully)

Not sure if this is the right thread for this kind of post, but I've been out of the custom build scene for about two years now and was thinking about throwing together a machine for the release of a few good looking PC games coming out this year, as well as HD movies. Here's what I've got so far: Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133045 CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115040 with: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118030 Ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231098 Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153039 Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131187 Video: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130339 Optical: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151153 That's all I would really need. I got a new 320gig harddrive over christmas that I never put to any use. I was also thinking about running four gigs of ram in this. And yes, it is a mirco case, but I wanted to try something different. Any feedback/suggestions are always welcome. Thanks.

I've never overclocked anything. I've only built one computer before this and didn't at the time due to lack of know-how/fear of frying my components. This processor is pretty fast stock, but if I did, it wouldn't be too much, probably high 2ghz, nothing special. But, thanks for your opinion! P.S. And yeah, I'd like to see what you're thinking about building.

    Re: Summer build (..hopefully)

    Here is my feedback:

Case - I personally don't know about microcases... The 9800GTX is a HUGE card, I would be worried about room and cooling. I have a coolermaster 830SE which is a NICE full tower case, but it may be too big/expensive, so I would go with an Antec Nine Hundred (best midtower out there). If your heart is set on the micro case, then go for it. I just havn't had much experience with microcases and wouldn't know if they would work well with this type of system.

CPU - Good choice going with Intel. I personally would invest more money and get the Q9450. The 6MB increase in L2 cache is pretty big, and it has a slightly higher stock speed. I see the Q9450 as a proc that would last a lot longer as far as keeping up with the evolving computer technologies. The cooler you selected is fine. I like Zalman products.

Ram - G. Skill is good ram. However, if you decide to go with a 64-bit OS, then I would go with 4GB. There are lots of 2x2GB 800MHz and 1066MHz kits out there for under a hundred bucks that are very stable. If your not going for a 64-bit OS, then you can just stick with the ram you selected. Its pretty solid.

PSU - I like it. Should be more power than you will ever need. Thermaltake and Corsair would be my top suggestions for PSU.

Mobo - I personally am not a fan of the P5 model mobos... even though some people swear by them. I would go with a 750i mobo... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130159 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188026 would be a good alternative in my opinion.

Vid Card - Great choice. The 9800GTX is the best single gpu solution out there. Stick with it!

Dvd-rom - Looks good to me. I don't know much about optical drives, but that one looks fast and would coverall of your dvd and cd needs!

Anyway, its a nice build. Only thing I would really change would be mobo and cpu... however, that is more a matter of opinion. Like I said, if you got with a 64-bit OS, go with 4GB of ram.. its worth it.

Hope this helps... good luck choosing components.

I know what you mean about the heat problem and room inside the case. But, I looked at both the customer reviews on Newegg, and the Thermaltake site. The harddrive cage that sits in the front of the case is removable and there are vents all over this thing. And the case length is around 17'' long. My last build was a mid-tower, I don't know why I wanted an SFF case but, I wanted to try it! Thanks for the reply!

The 9800GTX is a fine choice for single gpu video card.  It's usually the best performing.  If you want to save a few bucks, the 8800GTS 512mb performs only a little less, and costs less.  But if you want the better performance, go for the 9800GTX.

The 9800GX2 is an interesting option too, but I'd avoid it.  It's just not wise paying that much for a card imo.  Though it will be the best performing card.  Be careful as this is long card.  Your case is pretty small, and these things are huge so it might not even fit.
