My Perpetually Upgraded Gaming PC for April 2008

As customary for long time PC upgraders like myself, I am always looking for the next upgrade through deals and promotions throughout the year. In my current build, i have finally transitioned all of my PATA drives over to SATA, removed the Floppy Disc from my case build and began integrating LED lights, tastefully of course.

    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor

    cpu

    CPU Cooler: Tuniq Tower 120

Motherboard: ASUS P5N32-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

    motherboard

    Memory: OCZ SLI-Readh Edition 4gb (2x2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2-6400) Dual Channel Kit

    ram

    Hard Drive:Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA 3.0GB/S Hard drive with 32MB Cache

    hard drive

Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Case

    900 case

PowerSupply: OCZ GameXStream ATX12V 600W Power Supply

    psu

Audio: Razer Barracuda AC-1 7.1 Gaming Soundcard

    sound

Speakers: Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers with sub (9 years old)

    DVD- SONY_NEC/Optiarc CD/DVD DL burner

Input: Vantec 9in1 Memory card reader

Headphones: Razer Barracuda HP-1 HD-DAI (High Definition-Dedicated Audio Interface) Connector Circumaural Gaming Headphones

    headphone

Mouse: Razer Copperhead Blue WIRED Laser 2000 dpi Tempest Gaming Mouse

    mouse

Keyboard: Razer Tarantula Black USB Standard Ultimate Gaming Keyboard

    keyboard

    Video: (2) EVGA GeForce 8800GT Superclocked 512MB 256-BIT GDDR3 PCI-Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Video Card

    video

The computer is able to handle all games including Team Fortress2, Gears of War, Crysis, Call of Duty4, Medal of Honor Airborne, Hellgate London, World in Conflict and Peggle Smile without breaking a sweat.

Pros of this current upgrade include:

    CPU FSB speed @ 1333 (previously 1033MHz in e6600)

    8800GT in SLI (WOW!)

Gigabit Ethernet (noticibly faster FPS in online gaming)

    Cons:

    Added fan noise

Requires more power to operate (previously 480W now 600W)

Dust accululating in front case vents; requires cleaning every two days.

This build was carefully thought out and will continue to evolve as most of my personal computers have in the past.

    Thanks for reading my post.

Very impressive, acitydweller!  And welcome to HotHardware!

What do you have that CPU overclocked to?  I'd imagine it can go rather high with that mighty Tuniq Tower.

Yes, welcome to the HotHardware forum. That sounds like a pretty nice setup you have there. I am also interested to know if and to what extent you have OCed your E6750 to. It would be great if you have any pics of your system all assembled that you could post. That looks like a pretty massive heat sync, what are your temps at idle and load?

I know what you mean by the dust accumulation. My friend also has the Antec 900 and it gets so dusty! I don't know about you, but cable management was difficult for him in that case. So much so that he just left it in a mess....

If you think you can’t do something, you’ll never be able to do it. No matter how easy it is.

    Hello,

Thanks for the positive feedback. I have not yet overclocked the cpu as i havent had a block of time to really tweak and tune the machine lately. One thing i am noticing is that the 600w PSU is insufficient in powering all the hardware packaged. When an external HD is connected, it doesnt have anough power coming from any of the usb ports (front and rear) to power it without using the secondary usb cable. the ext hd works fine on my office desktop and two other laptops.

My new psu replacement just arrived last night. I ended up picking up a OCZ Gamexstream 850w with similar blue LEDs and a higher amp rating per cable. I trust this will address my power needs for the near future and i cross my fingers this isnt DOA as my previous ocz psu came.
