    8800GTX SLI worth it???

Currently I have a rig with E6420 core 2 duo running at 3.2Ghz, 2gb of ram and getting 12500 in 3D mark 06, I see no compelling reason to upgrade, however having said that I should say I see no compelling reason to move to the G92 or G94 as apart fro speed they bring nothing new to the party......

I have a spare 8800GTX that I was thinking of selling for about $300, perhaps it might be worth while keeping this card and upgrading my PSU to use these cards in SLI at least this would give me a boost in games like COD4 and Crysis, I game on an 22inch LCD 1680x1050 with a minimum of 4 FSAA and 16AF (preferably 8 or 8QS).

My question is would 8800GTX in SLI keep up with all the new cards coming out in the next 12 months?

With the exception of Crysis and perhaps Call of Juarez, any new game will run maxed on a single GTX so IMO you should stay with that for as long as you can and wait to see the performance of the 9800GTX. Sell your spare as you planned and save that money for now.

My Ultra is only marginally faster than a reference GTX and I'm completely satisfied with it for now so waiting shouldn't be all that hard for you either... I'm also gaming @ 1680.

I'd stick with the single GTX, running mixed cards in SLI just brings more headaches to the already complicated SLI party.  Sell the other card, stash the money, if the new cards turn out better buy one and use it while you sell the GTX for a second card.  The new gen 9XXX cards are getting 80 to 90% scalability in some reviews.  That makes it a much more worth while propisition than 20% from combining two current gen cards.

That way your running identical cards, and latest generation.

    I second that opinion...

Personally I've always thought multi cards seemed cumbersome anyway although I don't have firsthand experience with sli or xfire so I can't say too much.

BTW: Welcome to HotHardware guys... stick around!

     Hi All,

It's my understanding that SLI will only pay a significant benefit if you are a extreme gamer who is running a 30" monitor & wants to game @ 2560x1600 with all the eye candy turned on.

    I have a single 8800GTX Pushing a 32" Sharp LCD TV @ 1920 X 1080 & I've expreienced nothing but gaming bliss with it.

    Re: 8800GTX SLI worth it???

I am noticing a slowdown of frames in COD4 and Crysis with FSAA and AF enabled with the single card, I guess that having the other card will increase frame rates even at the lower resolution I play at...

    Re: 8800GTX SLI worth it???

That may be true JTM...But once you get into the 1650 or higher resolution areas for gaming, dual cards becomes a solution. At those higher resolutions you can't max out AA/AF and eye candy as well as with the lower resolutions (obviously =P), which is why SLI is picked up in these scenarios. But even at 1920x1200, a 8800 GTX is still quite capable of a very enjoyable experience....But try that on a 30" display monitor and that 2560x1600 res would bring it down to its knees if you try to bump up the AA/AF/Eyecandy. But even at 1650 and 1920...the different between sli and a single card is massive. The higher you go, the better it scales.

Check information to go this website where you can compare performance of SLI and Crossfire systems, 8800GTS included:
