any thing from the core 2 duo line will kill any of the AMD CPUs at the moment.

The Intel core 2 duo is the faster than AMD's CPU's currently, but AMD's CPU's are a lot cheaper right now. The difference isn't that huge of a difference, its like 10% to 20%. Lets compare the Intel C2D E6400 to the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+. While the Intel C2D E6400 out performs the X2 4600+ by around 10% to 20% the Intel chip cost $218 and the AMD chip cost $119. Actually in some benchmarks and games the AMD chip performs almost the same as the Intel chip. So you would be paying almost twice as much for up to 20% performance gain. If your on a budget I'd say go with AMD, if you have money to burn, and you want the best performance then go with Intel. Here take a look at these reviews.

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6400

There is also the option of the new AMD X2 brisbane. Its only 1.9ghz, but it overclocks like mad. You could get it to 2.3ghz easy, and a lot of people have said that they have gotten it to 2.9ghz. Its only $65. Please this post on it.

Intel processors are better than anything AMD has hands down. Make no bones about it.

I have 2 computers at home one is an AMD computer which was never overclocked with Retail motherboard and CPU Coller. The Processor is fried. AMD is pure junk as far as I am concerned. My AMD 2800XP processor just quit on me. This is the second AMD Processor that has died for no reason running at stock speeds.

My other computer is a 1.2 Gig Tulatin Core Celeron and it is running great after about 7 years. It still runs MS XP just fine.

As far as I am concerned I will never purchase another junky AMD Product.

Strange, I've never had a processor ever die on me... AMD, Intel or otherwise! I've built over a dozen machines within my family since the K7. Not one has had any issues. Since 1999 there has been very little reason until recently to purchase an Intel chip over an AMD one. Currently if you want top performance go Intel. If you're on a budget you'll be able to squeeze more out of AMD's current offerings.

Clock for clock, Intel's Core 2 Duos are hands down the best performers. And at the high-end, nothing AMD has can compete in raw performance. However, dollar for dollar, AMD CPUs are great buys. I'm testing the 5600+ at the moment, which you can buy for under $190 and it's faster than a similarly priced Intel CPU, plus the 5600+ is an 89W chip so it runs nice and cool.

If u want to upgrade ur CPU,u better to take a look for ur motherboard now whether can support new one.If not, i give u some info ....
1st : Which processor u want ? AMD or Intel ? Dual core oledi OK for many software & games.
2nd : Choose ur mainboard which can support ur processor and for futher upgraded.
3th : RAM can be chosen dual slot coz run better than single slot.
4th : Choose a harddisk about 160GB between 250GB enough for u to store many things
5th : Buy a graphic card(single) that can support SLI such as Geforce 8000++ series for futher upgrade ( Note : Depend on ur mainboard, mainboard better chose a SLI PCI x16 slot , choose a mainboard with low performance chipset

Note : All upgrade must depend on your motherboard,if i buy a board, i will consider with....
    AMD dual core/AM2/Socket 940
    4 memory slot 800/667 MHZ
    PCI x 16 express x2
    More SATA port available 300KB/S
    Ok chipset
    Gigabyte Lan 100MB/s
    1000MHZ Front speed bus
    7.1 sound channel ( EAX,Doubly surround )
    More USB 2.0 port
