    Speeding Up CPU Fan...

As some of you may be aware, I've been only a month long journey to hit 4.0Ghz with my E7200... Well I've got her at 3.8Ghz, but I think my temps are WAY too high... I've seen a spike to 70C, and right now they're at...... 60C and 62C for the cores... My question is, how hot is to hot for my CPU, and is there any way I can my the CPU Fan go faster????

70C is about the high before it starts crashing. Speedfan is a great program for controling fan speeds.

60 and 62c is way too hot IMO. Also, I think trying to hit 4Ghz on air is a bit crazy for a 2.53 Ghz CPU as too get to that speed you'll be needing to increase voltages. Also the CPU isn't the only thing you and CPU fan isn't all you'll need to pay attention to. Thats a big overclock and even though I haven't OC'ed in awhile I am pretty sure you'll need to fiddle with RAM voltages as well. And don't forget power and cooling everything else either.

(That's 3 answered posts. Don't get nervous or anything).  :)

PS. Something to remember is even though some ppl have gone beyond 4GHz, not every chip is the same. Even from the same batch. I just read a few posts on the internat and some people can't get past 3.4 and some 3.2GHz. 70c may be the max but when you start getting 10 degrees or less from that

while posting on a forum. I would worry. Again just my humble opinion....

    Re: Speeding Up CPU Fan...

What are you using to get the temps? Also is this with stock cooler? If you coud post some specs for me i will see what can be done. However lets asume for a second that you used core temp or real temp to get those temps then yes you are stepping on that chip and its not far from throttling.

Also what are you to stress test this chip with? Are you using Orthos to make sure its bullet proof at that speed? Get back with those bios specs volts timings and such and stock cooling or not and lets go from there.

Also 60- 65 under a load Is fine on a a c2d or c2q , but cooler is always better.

Last I heard the BIOS (And any software that reads the BIOS for temps) is 8-10 degrees c low. Is that still the case?

They can be way off low or high.

    Re: Speeding Up CPU Fan...

The reason I remember it being wrong was that the temp probe didn't actually touch the die and some heat was lost in reaching the probe. That being said, I can understand it being low as heat will dissipate as it travels, but how would it be high?

    Re: Speeding Up CPU Fan...

Okay Necro thanks for all the help, xD. So let me answer all the questions posed so far in the order that they were posted here...

I'm using Speed Fan to get the temps, it's with the stock cooler, yes. As soon as I can get another job, I'll be getting a new GPU, and with that (Unless my MoBo's actually broken, lol.) a VERY nice cooler. (Just glanced at Speed Fan and she's at 73C, btw, all the temps I posted were idle, lol.) My voltage is 1.4v. I actually haven't stress tested at all, but after I'm done posting here, I'll be sure to go and get it. I also turned off my Auto-Fan in the BIOS which, according to the description make my CPU Fan run at full RPM's all the time, and apparently Full RPM's is around 1800 - 2000RPM... Now that I think about it I didn't start having problems with my RAM until I got to 3.8Ghz... RAM's voltage is 2.0V, even though it's supposed to get 2.2v (Vista crashed when I had it that high.) Anyway, is there a way that by OCing so high, I could be causing problems for my RAM?

***Edit: I didn't notice that something was taking up 50% of the CPU when I posted those temps... Right now, at TRUE she's at 49C, and 50C... I'll leave Speed Fan running while I"m playing a game next time to record my temps.

    Re: Speeding Up CPU Fan...

Well, I've got two BSoD's at 3.8Ghz, I don't know if that's my RAM or the Frequency, but I've brought her down to 3.2, and it's staying around 40C... Maybe later I'll try like 3.5 or something, idk, it's a lot of fun though... xD Oh... I'm looking to get this in a month or two along with my 4850

Yeah if its sitting at 70C idle then its going to crash everytime there is a load but on it. Get a better cooler and make another run at it.

    Re: Speeding Up CPU Fan...

Ok download real temp. Speedfan isn''t given you the corret temps. Also download orthos and start stressing that thing every time you raise the clocks. Youir flying by the seat of your pants with this overclock by not stress testing and eventually its gonna bite you.Besides how will you know its stable if your not stress testing?

I use coretemp to get the real temps and then you can set speedfan to read correctly. Heed warlord's warning!

    Re: Speeding Up CPU Fan...

My whole rig has went to sh*t, constand BSoD's even at 2.53GHz... I'm working on getting Vista to work and if it works, then I'm just gunna leave it until I have a job again... Then I'll get a nice cooler along with a GPU Upgrade... :(

Try resetting your bios. If that doesn't work run chkdsk.

Indeed do what bob on the cob said to get it back working again, and i wouldnt try to OC it again with out some better cooling on it.

Don't let this discorage you. You just need to take it slower. Don't be impatient. It will take you hours and hours to get a good stable overclock. If you get inpatient and you will get disk errors or worse kill something in your pc.
