    help with CPU/Chipset choice

I have to build a system on the cheap for my mom and normally  Iwould go with AMD for this but I was curious as to whether I could do it cheaper and faster with Intel. It's been awhile since I bought Intel gear and I am a bit out of the loop. I need something to compare to an AMD AthlonX2 4600+ paired with a 690G chipset based mobo. Any ideas? The only requirment is that it not be a Celeron chip. Thanks in advance for any help.

I used to carry a hammer in my computer tool kit. Just for fixing the packard Bells though.......

I agree. Give the total price your aiming for and will you need everything or just a base system ? Will you need keyboard mouse and monitor ETC. Will you need a copy of Windows ?

Sorry I wasn't clear enough. I blame age and drink! I just needed a Chipset and CPU reccomendation. I'm trying to stay in the $40-$60 range for the mobo and under $60 for the CPU.

At that price range, I was coming up with Celerons. I don't think it will be that bad since they are based on the Conroe-L core.

You can spend a little less on the motherboard and a little more on the processor to get a Pentium that is based on the Allendale core.

Umm... Did you say you had an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+? That would be on the 939 socket with DDR right? So if you went with Intel, you would need to get new RAM since Intel uses DDR2. If I'm right, you need to also facor a RAM upgrade in your budget.

If you think you can’t do something, you’ll never be able to do it. No matter how easy it is.

No. I didn't mention what she has now. I was specing an AMD AM2 (DDR2) based system to compare with. She does already have DDR2 RAM. And that's what I found. I can build and Atlon X2 AM2 system for the same or less than the Celeron and get better performance and a longer lifespan. Thanks for your reply. It did help.
