    Re: Post your Desktop!

Yeah I made the move, at first I was a bit unsure if it was the best idea, but I promised myself I would wait one month.  its been a month and I only logged into XP once, and that was to be able to remote assist someone, seeing as my version of vista is broken for doing that. (likely my own fault for it not working as I only spent 5 minutes trying to make it work and then rebooted into XP.)

No Im upgrading a PC for a friend to sell for her and since she,s not in a hurry Im playing with vista, and firefox trying to famialurise myself with it so when I get a rig built I,ll know my way around it better!

    Re: Post your Desktop!

That makes better sence, I figured you were running some sort of skinning tool for xp, I am not even sure if Vista would allow an install on your rig(no offence intended).  Good choices made on getting used to firefox, but you can do that on your current rig as well.  I strongly recommend any browser over IE, Opera being another one to look into if you find Firefox, not to your liking.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe you can only remote with Ultimate and Home Premium -- so I guess if you are running Basic or Business you may be SOL (but you should correct me if I am wrong)

    Re: Post your Desktop!

Well I am not sure about Ultimate, but I am running home premium, looks like I can be the sender, but I can be the receiver of a  remote request.  In the end the solution to that problem has been the install of VNC on the machine I am supporting regularily.

    Re: Post your Desktop!

indeed.....apparently VNCs in general are MUCH easier to use/upkeep than is remote assitant anyway.

I have been meaning to set up a connection between my mother and myself for a while now but have not gotten around to it -- what would you recommend? (She is running Basic and I am Home Premium so remote assitance by Windows is out of the picture)

the simplest and most elegant way I have seen so far for beginner/novice users would have to be crossloop

Its based on TightVNC and I find after reading the breif getting started tutorials its plain simple.  If your looking for a more robust program, try the actualy tight vnc client, IMHO very well featured, I haven't found need to complain anyway.

You are my hero!! Just what I've been looking for. I tryed it out on me and my girls computers today. I can finally fix my moms computer. I tryed getting the remote assitants in windows to work but getting her to do stuff over the phone is a nogo. After 2 hours I gave up.
