More ATi 4800 hoopla and scuttlebutt

    http://www.tomshardware.tw/549,news-549.html

    See traslation attempt here:

    Traslation Result

One thing I don't like is that it seems like 4870 has very high power requirements.  This is odd because the 3800 line was very low power.

One thing that was hard to get out of the translation but I noticed what that it says the performance of the 3850 will be close to the 9800GTX.  I hope so.  But I doubt the 4870 will eclipse the 9800GX2.

    $329 4870

    $229 4850

Considering the 4870 has GDDR5, it could have enough performance to be worth an extra $100.  We'll see.

We will see, I like the 4850 being single slot, it has a nice sleek look. Hopefully it performs, and I thought toms hardware was english???

i hope it does i hate the lack of competition we've been seeing from amd all around.  i'm really hoping the 4870 beats the 9800x2 and comes close enough to the gtx260 to cause nvidia to drop prices on both of the gtx models.  i really don't hold any hope for the 4870x2 to beat the gtx280 but hey it could happen.

yeah if NVIDIA sticks with there use of GDDR3 even on there top end GDDR5 alone will outperform it thats 300% faster memory (GDDR4 is 100% faster therfore GDDR 5 would be 300% becuase it's 100 percent over Gddr4 or triple the power of gddr3) the reason it uses more energy is the memory and the double energy usage of the GPU over current.

It looks that Ati is still one step behind from Nvidia. They will release card that will beat 9800GX2 and yet Nvidia is publishing new line... I just hope that new Ati cards will be able to compete with GTX200.

    What are official launch dates?

or they compete at price if you can cf 2 ati card for the same price as the best nvidia and the ati cards win... thats a score for ati in my book. its all about best bang for buck. ive never had an ultra high end card.  cmon 8800 ultra? just overclock your gtx....

Well, I don't see any point in saving on GPU when you are buying $1,5k CPU :) When you are getting everything high end then don't stop on graphics :)

I am thinking of updating my 8800GTS 320MB but I have  only 17" so need for that yet...

no one brought up a 1.5k cpu most people spend under 500 on a cpu. most gamers care more about graphcis card than cpu because graphics card is usually the limit.

I find it intresting that ATI is using GDDR5 while Nvid sticks with GDDR3 and still the Nvid cards are out paceing the ATI cards. Makes me wonder why ATI can get the GDDR4/5 perfoming better...

Perhaps video cards do not yet need more bandwith than 256-bit with GDDR3.

the 2900 tried 512 bit and it sucked compared to the 8800.... :-/ 512 bit is too costly and shows not enough improvment at this point

But will it make a difference?  There's no difference between 256-bit and 512-bit Radeon 3870s, for example.  And the new G92 cards are all 256-bit, yet often beat the 320-bit and 384-bit G80 cores.  But different cores are different apples, but just saying.  Going with GDDR5 and keeping with 256-bit helps increase the bandwith too.
