Nvidia's 55nm parts to launch in June

Nvidia should have its 55nm chips ready in Q2, and this time we got an even more precise date than just a quarter. When a company says it launches something in Q2, we always hope for early Q2; but in reality it always comes at the end of the quarter.

Nvidia won't make an exception, as its 55nm parts should launch around June time, which is the last month of the quarter. As of today, Nvidia's 55nm chip looks like an advanced and die shrunk version of its well-known G92 chip, but we are still missing many details about it.

At least Nvidia can show the world that it can do it, but we won’t miss the chance to remind you that this will occur more than six months after ATI managed to launch its first 55nm chip. In the meantime, all ATI chips are 55nm, while Nvidia is still at 65nm.

Does this mean that GT200 will be postponed?

I take everything from Fudzilla with a massive grain of salt. Considering he got kicked from the Inquirer, I really don't trust alot of the things he says.

That being said, I could potentially see this being true, kind of like Intel's "Tick - Tock" scheme, release a die shrunk part, then a die shrunk part with new architecture a bit later.

I really hope that these will be launched with the GT200,because for 2 years we are spinning in circles with the same technologies.GT200 will not feature DX10.1,but at least it will have a better performance than the current G92 refresh

Is there a real big benefit to a 55nm chip? Will there be a performance increase? Will the chip be applied to existing lines of 8xxx ad 9xxx series or just newer cards?

they promised a G92 with 55nm process of manufacture. This does not mean an increase in performance, only lower temps and lower voltage.

Ah ic... well, there is nothing wrong with lower temps and power usage! ... Hmm... so I guess I should buy three G92 cards now for tri-SLI, then three G92 cards with 55nm chips in tri-SLI.. this way.. i can compare the temperature and power usages!...

     ... ya right....

i'd love to do it... if someone supplies the motherboard and video cards... I won't mind running the tests :)

I guess it is much better to build a tri sli with 3x9800GT than buying a 9800GX2

This has the added benefit of allowing for much higher clocked core / shaders, as well as Nvidia being able to cram in another 64 or 128 shaders.

Compare Radeon 2600 to Radeon 3650 to see the results of 65nm to 55nm.  Slight power reduction.  The 2900 to 3800 was 80nm to 55nm so it won't be that big of a deal, but it will help.
