    AMD Phenom 9500 and AM2 6400+

    Any performance comparison of them?

In Australia the price is this:

    Phenom 9500 - $ 253

    AM2 6400+ - $222

    Re: AMD Phenom 9500 and AM2 6400+

I believe in general the performance difference is that the Phenom WILL be faster in every aspect as soon as AMD figures out the whole optimization thing. Since the phenom really is the first

"true" Quad Core processor as opposed to intels - semi-quad core its going to have a ton of growing pains and the biggest of which is going to be getting some optimizations in either a driver patch for the OS

or just having it embedded in to it. The biggest thing thats killing the phenom right now is the TLB (not the bug - b4 everyone jumps all over this); and without really getting into it - Im not even sure if the current implementation of Hypertransport is really doing a good job at supporting this monster, but rather the fact that windows and most applications while they have optimizations for multi-core, really aren't optimized outside of dual-core. So with that said id say for the long hall go with the phenom, but if you just want kick-*** performance right now, grab the AM2.

well that depends on what you do on a daily basis, if it's truly work related, video encodes, office suites, video editing. then i would go with the phenom. otherwise, if it's games, then stick with the x2, you won't see much of an increase, if at all in the quad-core from the x2, namely in memory bandwidth, and with the TLB problem, you would see worse performance still.

Do you already have a board? or no? If not, you might want to wait for yorkfield. Why? On yorkfields release, q6600 prices will be cut to around 200. So it will definitely be a better buy, Phenom has way too many issues and not really the best bet ATM until they're fixed (which seems to be unlikely considering the delays and the difficulty of Native quad on a 65NM SOI process). If you have a board and just want to upgrade the CPu...Choice is yours really, but the 6400 X2 in numerous benchmarks can beat and has beat a phenom in specific applications. So if I was you, I'd just avoid Phenom for now. If you use a lot of multi-threaded applications, then you should consider it for the benefits of multiple cores. If you can save a little extra money, a Q6600 is around 270-280, couple that with a low budget board...Still a quality board, but just lacks Firewire and raid...Which would be the gigabyte P35-DS3L which ranges around 75-95.

That would be my 2 cents...If money is an issue, then take a look at the phenom only if you need a quad for multithreaded apps. If not, a X2 is still a good purchase..But up to you. If you OC, go for intel all the way, no point in nabbing a AMD based CPU if you plan to OC, intel's offerings are monsters in this regard.

If you have ANY questions, just feel free to post and I'll help you out in any which way, whether it be part selection, or advice on future products and the longevity of your new system based on the cpu you go for. ^_^

From an OS standpoint and a software standpoint there is no difference between a "true" a.k.a Monolithic Quad and a Dual die Quad. Optimisation wise (per title) Phenom could perhaps still get a slight boost but that is mostly wishful thinking.

Phenom is just not all it was hyped up to be. Now if I were to choose between an Athlon64 X2 or a Phenom I would pick the Phenom. Simply due to the fact that the near future looks to be more parallel and having 4 cores should end up showing great benefits over 2 cores (Alan Wake, the game, should highlight that advantage).
