USI Boasts Of Thinnest MID

At the Intel Developer Forum in Taipei, Taiwan, USI showed off what they’re calling the world’s thinnest Mobile Internet Device based on Intel’s Atom processor. Weighing about 8.82 ounces and measuring just 0.59 inches thick, the MID160 provides a PC-like Internet browsing experience with Flash and the latest Web technologies in a portable form.

This tablet-style MID has a 5-inch, 800 x 480 pixel  touch screen that is capable of displaying 167,000 colors. For connectivity, it uses an in-house small footprint WiMAX SiP (system in package), a dual-band Wi-Fi / WiMAX module, and a 3G module from Option.

The MID160 is powered by an unspecified Atom processor, 512MB of memory, and an 8GB SSD hard drive.

“The new Intel Atom processor enables the best Internet experience in pocketable mobile Internet devices,” said Pankaj Kedia, director of global ecosystem programs for Intel Corporation’s Ultra Mobility Group. “It was designed to help make the Internet on small devices possible and for energy efficiency. When combined with USI’s system level innovation, the Intel Atom processor makes it possible to achieve smaller, yet smarter MIDs for the demanding mobile user.”
Additional specs include:

• Ubuntu Linux
• Supports Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, GPS, HSDPA, or WiMAX
• 3.5 Microphone or headset jack
• microSD slot
• Web cam

The bad news is that USI didn’t provide any information on price or availability, which could mean the company is looking for one of its customer to push it out to the rest of us.
