Sony Vows to Compete with Galaxy S III, iPhone 5 with Future Flagship Handset
In a roundabout sort of way, Sony admitted that none of its smartphones are as good as Samsung's Galaxy S III or Apple's iPhone 5. No big revelation there, even if only looking at the sales figures. The Galaxy S III, for example, is currently the world's top selling handset, while Sony's Xperia line isn't even on the radar. And therein lies the problem. The solution? Build a better device, and that's exactly what Sony intends to do.
In an interview with Financial Times Deutschland, Sony Mobile Sales and Marketing Chief Dennis van Schie said his company will soon reveal a "flagship model" that's capable of competing with the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III. He stopped short of offering up any hardware specifications, though did say Sony's flagship device will be revealed in January 2013 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
Dennis van Schie also said his company is keeping a close eye on Windows Phone devices, though he's more concerned with Android at the moment.
"We have a good relationship with Microsoft and we are watching the development of Windows Phone closely. If it succeeds, we will not be caught off guard," Schie said.
While we don't know any specifics yet, there's already been speculation that Sony's flagship device will end up being the rumored Sony Yuga. The Yuga features a 5-inch 1080p display, has 2GB of RAM, a 12MP camera, and is believed to use a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor.
