Sony Ericsson Brings Android 2.3 To Xperia Neo Smartphone

Sony Ericsson really came to play at this year's Mobile World Congress. On top of the Xperia Pro and the PlayStation Phone (which isn't actually called that, for whatever reason!), the Xperia Neo was also unveiled. It's an interesting play for SE. It's basically an Xperia Arc, but with slightly lower-end features. We're guessing this will be sold for less and marketed at a slightly different group of people, indicating that SE is once again serious about competing on a number of levels in the cellphone universe (rather than just going for one or two and hoping for the best).

The Neo has a 3.7" (854 x 480) display, the same as the Xperia Pro. But there's no slide-out QWERTY keyboad; instead you'll rely on an on-screen virtual keyboard, but as you know, Android allows for all sorts of third-party options to be installed (Swype, SwiftKey, etc.). Again similar to the Pro, there's a 1GHz Snapdragon MSM8255 processor, a microSD card slot, Google Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) as the operating system, an Exmor R mobile sensor, built-in HDMI connector and a Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine. It'll ship by the end of Q1 in Blue, Red and Silver, but no pricing information is readily available. We also aren't aware of any U.S. carriers signed on to carry it, but having a few partners is vital to SE regaining share in this market, which is already being dominated by HTC, Samsung and LG.

February 13, 2011, Barcelona, Spain – Sony Ericsson today unveils the Xperia™ neo and Xperia™ pro, the newest additions to the new generation of Xperia™ smartphones. Closely following the launch of the Xperia™ arc smartphone earlier this year, these latest smartphones also feature cutting edge technology from Sony and an exceptional multimedia experience on the latest version of the Android™ platform – Gingerbread.

Featuring an ergonomically crafted keyboard, Sony Ericsson has focused on integrating the hardware with clever messaging functions for a perfect user experience. Xperia™ pro introduces the subtle but fast Type & Send functionality eliminating the need to open a dedicated app for each type of message, and Smart Keyboard that triggers predictive messaging actions automatically when the user slides out the keyboard.

These latest devices combine stunning design with state-of-the-art Sony technology and a new faster messaging experience on the Xperia™ pro, creating an entertaining smartphone experience."

The best of Sony technology once again features in both Xperia™ pro and Xperia™ neo. Xperia™ neo builds on the stunning design language that Sony Ericsson has become known with a unique shape that not only looks good, but is ergonomically designed to fit perfectly in the user's hand, especially when taking pictures.

Both smartphones will launch on the latest version of the Android™ platform providing access to Google Mobile Services and the myriad of applications available via the Android market. Sony removes Linux from my PS3... now wants me to buy their new phone powered by Linux.

Forget that.

I laugh at the irony... i had a similar thought when the psp phone with android was announced... anywho, i dont use linux on my ps3, never really had a reason to do so... considering i have the ps3 slim... but i can imagine being annoyed if the feature was stripped away from you.
