Sears And Kmart Launch Alphaline Entertainment Movie Download Service

RoxioNow really is everywhere these days. As the year draws to a close, Sonic Solutions has announced that their RoxioNow platform licensee Sears and Kmart have started their own online movie download service by the name of Alphaline Entertainment. The world probably doesn't need another movie download service at the moment, but with the winners and losers still being sorted out, Sears is hoping to branch out and find revenue from a very unlikely source.

The new service enables Sears and Kmart customers to download entertainment online, including new movies on the same day they are released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Sonic is working with Sears on a multi-phase rollout that includes making the service available from a broad range of connected devices and ensuring compatibility with studio-supported digital programs. The multi-year agreement allows the two companies to team up and embed the services at a chip level on a growing network of devices including portable media players, Blu-ray Disc players, mobile phones, and high-definition television sets from leading manufacturers.

Neither company is really talking about specific product names, but we're sure that will be cleared up soon. So, where are you renting from tonight? iTunes? Redbox? Sears? Kmart? Hmm...
