Samsung Readies New Netbook and Smartphones

Chi Youngcho, head of the recently created digital media and communications unit at Samsung Electronics, recently hinted at a few new products on a quarter-end conference call with analysts. First up was the mention of a few new handsets, with the executive stating that "in the first half of this year, it will expand its lineup [of touchscreen phones] and upgrade some of the functions including the user interface." Potentially more intriguing was the mention of "various OSes [that would] satisfy the diverse needs of customers." We already knew that Samsung was a proud member of the Open Handset Alliance, and rumors have already swirled around an Android-based mobile arriving in the second quarter of 2009. With this, we now have all the more reason to cautiously anticipate.

In other news, Mr. Youngcho made clear that Samsung was aiming to "expand its PC business by launching a new netbook." Unfortunately, he failed to elaborate while on the phone, though it's widely expected that the forthcoming machine will be the NC20 -- the natural successor to the highly stylish NC10.
