RIM Confirms New BlackBerry Curve 3G Smartphone
Late last week a Canadian wireless provider posted RIM's upcoming BlackBerry Curve 3G (previously known as the Curve 9300) for sale, and today Research In Motion (RIM) is making the device official. RIM's press release doesn't bring a whole lot to the table that wasn't already leaked, but the company did say the Curve 3G will ship with the BlackBerry 5 OS and will be upgradeable to BlackBerry 6, the upcoming OS that RIM hopes will put it back on the smartphone radar.
"The majority of people in the worldwide mobile phone market have yet to buy their first smartphone and the BlackBerry Curve 3G is designed to provide an extremely attractive and accessible choice that will help convince many of them to make the leap," said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. "The new BlackBerry Curve 3G is a perfect choice for happily busy people who are looking for a user-friendly 3G smartphone to help them make the most of their day and to stay connected with their friends, family and co-workers."
The big feature here is obviously the support for 3G on GSM-based networks, a first for BlackBerry devices, which in the past have been saddled with 2.5G EDGE for wireless data. T-Mobile will be first out of the gates with the Curve 3G in the "coming weeks," while AT&T will follow soon after.
Sticking true to BlackBerry form, the Curve 3G will sport a full QWERTY keyboard and optical trackpad. It will also come with built-in GPS, Wi-Fi, dedicated media keys, a microSD/SDHC slot with support for up to 32GB memory cards, a 320x240 color display, 2MP camera, and 256MB of internal memory.
