Opera Mini for iPhone Already Downloaded 1 Million Times

Well that was fast. According to Opera Software, the company's Opera Mini browser for the iPhone was downloaded more than one million times on its first day of availability in Apple's App Store. Three days later, the Safari alternative ranked as the number one iPhone app in the 22 featured Apple App Stores on their site.

"Today iPhone users have a choice, and, as the numbers show, they are eager to explore new and faster ways to surf the Web on the iPhone - especially during heavy Web traffic," said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. "With any widely available and frequently downloaded Opera product, we are appreciative of all the feedback we are getting, as it helps us to continually improve our product and better meet the needs of our users."

Opera Software claims its mobile browser delivers up to six times the speed of other browsers, especially when there's a ton of network activity. A large reason for this is the server-side compression scheme, which also helps users on a pay-per-MB payment plan.
