Netflix Could Gain Disc-Free PS3 Functionality Soon

Do you enjoy using Netflix on your PlayStation 3? It's a great service, and it's a great addition to an already powerful and flexible console. But one thing annoys us: it requires a specific Netflix disc in order to work. If you misplace your disc or head over to a friend's home without it, your PS3 simply cannot access Netflix. And considering that the Xbox 360 can access Netflix without any kind of special disc, this makes it that much harder to swallow.

But according to Netflix's CEO Reed Hastings, PS3 owners won't have to deal with this frustration for too much longer. In the company's most recent conference call to discuss their quarterly earnings, Reed stated that he hopes to luanch "a new version of our Sony PS3 user interface which doesn't require a disc, and is dynamically updated continuously with the latest Netflix UI improvements."

We do as well. According to reports, this new functionality could come as early as October, which would enable Sony to market their PS3 as an even more direct threat to the Xbox 360 in the upcoming holiday sales season. In related news, Reed is also planning to watch for what consumers like and don't like about Hulu Plus, and eventually incorporate some of that feedback into their own products. It's too early to tell just how much Netflix will be changing over the next year, but as cable and satellite providers begin to offer more and more PPV/movies, Netflix will have to up their game if they hope to compete with services that most Americans already have at their disposal.

It really is a hassle constantly swapping out that disc lol

I'll play a game in it, then shut it off and go do something else. I come back later and I want to watch some netflix... I sit down and get comfy on the couch... and then I realize the disc isn't in... ugh.... just got comfy... gotta get up to change the disc lol

Plus MS you have to have a gold subscription which I refuse to pay for.As Liz Lemon says... they can eat my poo!

It's been well known for some time that MS's exclusive agreement was expiring late this year and that this would be coming immediately after that expiration.

Yes but what is the exact date?

And i've been waiting for this for a while now

Well, the XBox got the functionality in November of 2008. As they've previously said it expires in 'late 2010', that makes me think it was probably a 2 year deal and expires in November of this year.

So, I wouldn't hold my breath for October, unless they were a month late pushing out the original XBox feature (entirely possible).

The reason we got Netflix is because our son shoved 5 dvd's into our ps3 while it was off and busted some gears on the player. SO we have to buy games off ps3 store or we are screwed but we thought HEY we can stream netflix. AFTER getting it we realize we have to use a disk, WE CANNOT use a disk. So we are stuck streaming it to computer for now :( I REALLY hope they do change that because why should one console use a disk and the other doesn't need one. *sigh*

The reason why Netflix has an exclusivity deal with Microsoft is because of Economics my friend, companies just don't change on a whim just for you MChalmers; the deal Sony is offering has to better then what Microsoft is offering if they want to earn exclusivity, or they could just sign two contracts and have both discless access on both the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

Also, have you thought of actually opening up your PS3 and taking the drive to a repair place to replace the gears on it. If he didn't damage the laser then there's still a good chance you can save the drive and have Netflx on your PS3 for now.

Well i'm willing to bet Sony already had the app created and ready to launch the second they get the green light lol

Also, MS is going to have to make Netflix streaming on their 360 a free service(doesn't require a gold membership) if they want to stay competitive!

Hold up acarzt, we don't know if Netflix is going to be free or require a PSN Plus subscription.

what the heck is a PSN plus subscription?

And i'm already streaming netflix from the disc for free.

To stream on Xbox you have to pay.

There is a very high probability that it will be free. I see no reason why it wouldn't.
