Jack Thompson Gets Served
John “Jack” Bruce Thompson is a name you might have heard but don't exactly know who he is. He is a lawyer from Florida who is well known for stirring up as much trouble as he can for the video game industry. Mr Thompson has, on many occasions, associated various high-profile violent crimes with video games, often when it is clear that the perpetrator didn't even play games.
His latest comments about the NIU shooting apparently went against a warning issues to him last April by the Supreme Court. As a result, the Supreme Court sent Thompson the following:
02/19/2008 ORDER-SHOW CAUSE
TO: JOHN BRUCE THOMPSON
It appears to the Court that you have abused the legal system by submitting numerous frivolous and inappropriate filings in this Court.
Therefore, it is ordered that you shall show cause on or before March 5, 2008, why this Court should not find that you have abused the legal system process and impose upon you a sanction for abusing the legal system, including, but not limited to directing the Clerk of this Court to reject for filing any future pleadings, petitions, motions, letters, documents, or other filings submitted to this Court by you unless signed by a member of The Florida Bar other than yourself.”
We were wondering if Thompson would start accusing the courts of playing video games in which the objective was deny lawyers a platform to lash out at whatever they saw fit, but instead he seems to be threatening them with dismantlement. Subtle as always, we're still looking for the video game that is making him act this way.
