Harry Potter Malware Funnier Than Actual Book
The Harry Potter series of novels is popular, to say the least. It's popular enough to spawn a malware e-mail scheme. An e-mail promising an attachment that contains a copy of the latest wildly anticipated novel "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" contains a virus instead. But at least it's an amusing virus. It attacks USB memory drives to help it spread, and pranks the hell out of the user.
A file called 'HarryPotter-TheDeathlyHallows.doc' can be found on infected PCs and once opened the only words inside are: Harry Potter is dead.
But it doesn't end there.
The worm also creates a number of new Windows users on the computer which are named after the main characters in JK Rowling's popular books including Harry Potter, Hermione Grainger and Ron Weasley.
Logging in to any of these new users and a message which sounds like it appeared from the evil Lord Voldemort himself can be seen: "Read and repent, the end is near, repent from your evil ways O Ye folks lest you burn in hell . . . JK Rowling especially".
Open Internet Explorer, and the worm redirects you to an Amazon page for a parody Potter book called "Harry Putter and the Chamber of Cheesecake." The hook in 99% of e-mails is offering to send you something you know you shouldn't have. So remember folks, there's no free lunch; just free cheesecak
