HH and MSI Lazy Days Of Summer Sweepstakes!

To pay tribute to the hot, lazy days of summer, we're giving away some equally HOT new hardware in conjunction with our friends at MSI! This time around, you could win a pair of MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GB GeForce GTX 460 cards for some SLI action and an awesome MSI Big Bang-XPower motherboard. In addition, for the duration of the contest, we'll also be giving away 10 copies of the DX11 and PhysX-enabled game Metro 2033!

As we've done with previous sweepstakes, we’ll be giving this prize package away to a randomly selected contributor to our on-line forum and discussion systems, but like many previous contests, there are other ways to enter (see below)...

Grand Prize: (2) MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GB cards, (1) MSI Big Bang-XPower motherboard

Runners Up: (10) Copies of Metro 2033

To be entered into the sweepstakes, you’ve got to be a registered, active member of our forum and a resident of the United States or Canada. If you’re not already a member, you can sign up quickly and easily (and for free), right here.

From this point forward, we’ll be monitoring discussions here in the news and in the forum. We will be randomly selecting winners based on community involvement and quality of contribution. You can also increase your chances of winning by signing up for our HotHardware News Alerts or becoming a fan of HotHardware via our respective DiggFacebook and / or Twitter pages. And we’d urge you to become a fan of MSI’s Facebook page as well! The contest will run through Monday September 13, 2010 at which point we’ll announce the grand prize winner.

This is a great chance for to you to win some powerful hardware. Now go make some new friends in the forum and get in the running! Good Luck!

Do want! For the record, I also have Metro 2033, so give count me out from the game contest but in for the hardware.

Yep, a pair of those bad boys and you'll be running cool, quiet and lightning fast!

Those are some nice givaways nice board, graphics and game I would like to own any one of those so count in and good luck to all you guys and any gals out there!!

realneil 4 years ago

By 3vi1 "That cyclone cooler looks wicked"

These Cyclone cards are rated higher than any other GTX460's on the market at present. They are quieter and faster than all of the others. I also read a review of two of these cards running in SLI. They smoked a GTX480 card while using less power and the two of them together cost less!

I'm gonna go read up on the Mainboard now,.........Is it this one?

I'm in for this one folks! Yow, what a prize!

3vi1 4 years ago

Hmmm... wonder if you could put them in tri-SLI with a GTX465?

acarzt 4 years ago

I don't think so sir.

but for an extra $230 you could pick up a 3rd 460 and run a tri-sli and really be smokin

realneil 4 years ago
you could pick up a 3rd 460 and run a tri-sli
The GTX460's don't have the connection to setup three together, just two at a time.

NVIDIA probably did this to keep from destroying all future sales of their way-more expensive GTX470 and GTX480 room heaters. Embarrassed

Aww dang... what a gype... I never noticed that before Sad

I had always just assumed.. cuz why would nvidia leave off such a potentially awesome option?

Le Sigh Sad

realneil 4 years ago
why would nvidia leave off such a potentially awesome option?
According to reviews being posted all over the place, two of these things are beating their own GTX480 cards significantly, yet together they cost less than one GTX480 does.

I believe that three of them together would probably destroy sales of the GTX470 and GTX 480 completely due to the GTX470 and GTX480's huge power draws and outrageous heat output. These things (GTX460 1GB) draw very little power and produce hardly any heat compared to many other cards.

A three way SLI with them would be awesome. The decision to limit the SLI capabilities was just preserving their flagship segment for them.

acarzt 4 years ago

it would be nice if a 3rd party went and enabled Tri-SLI anyway lol

Maybe when the 470 and 480 refresh comes, we might get some 460 tri-sli love?

One can hope right?

That or we might get a 495 with a pair of 460s on board and 2GB or ram?

Then we'll get 4 460s in a nice little package :-D

realneil 4 years ago
it would be nice if a 3rd party went and enabled Tri-SLI anyway
How would they connect without a plug to use?
we might get a 495 with a pair of 460s on board and 2GB
Yeah, two of those would be significant,.....

Inspector 4 years ago

What do you mean without a plug to use realneil?

realneil 4 years ago
What do you mean without a plug to use realneil?
There is only one connection per card. For triple SLI you need a second connector on each card. See pic below.

Inspector 4 years ago

If a manufacture were to add a triple SLI to it, wouldn't they be able to just add the connector???

acarzt 4 years ago

it would be nice if a 3rd party went and enabled Tri-SLI anyway
How would they connect without a plug to use?
Well that was what I was intending neil.

For them to add the connector to enable Tri-SLI.

They went out of there way to slap together all kinds of other absurd concoctions(like the ares card)

I would think a tri-SLI capable 460 would be slightly easier to do and sell significantly better.

The only question is, will the drivers support it?

realneil 4 years ago
I would think a tri-SLI capable 460 would be slightly easier to do and sell significantly better. The only question is, will the drivers support it?
Their drivers support Tri-SLI already, So drivers wouldn't be a problem unless they excluded 3 GTX460's on purpose. (not beyond the realm of possibility) I think that when a manufacturer buys from NVIDIA or ATI, they make agreements as to what they are allowed to do with the technology offered beforehand. They may be limited by contract. NVIDIA would be fools to allow these cards in a 3-way SLI setup. We would just be happy.

a750gixr 4 years ago

Tri SLI would make this into a sweet machine!

Inspector 4 years ago

We already talked about that a750 :D, its not possible to do tri SLI as they don't provide the plug on the card.

Who could not know about SWTOR "i vote the new star wars game as the game of choice.". I have been on there forum since November 2 years ago now waiting on this one. Of course MMO's are my thing game wise so there may be something to that as well.

This would be a sweet setup for sure that Motherboard in itself is sick, and that is not to even mention a SLI 460GTX setup to go along with it either. This is a great contest any way you look at it with some top gear being given away.

I am gonna try on this one of course I am heading for Bentonville, Arkansas Wednesday to start a nation wide roll out for 2 straight months. So it may be difficult we will just have to see how it all rolls together.

Either way good luck to everyone!

I've actually been beta testing this game and getting some insider info for a while now. And you guys are going to have to take my word for it when I say it's unlike an MMO that I've played before.

I look forward to playing it with you all sometime next year, it's a game you WANT to be addicted to!

And one of the better parts of the game is that it gets progressively harder and more epic as you journey through your character's storyline.

ddayjason 4 years ago

The architecture examination hints that the GeForce GTX 460 1,024MB will perform similarly to a GTX 465, losing a bit of geometry performance but clawing it back in shading and texturing. Of course, any performance predictions are useless without a knowledge of clock-speeds, so let's head on over to a handy table

amdcrankitup 4 years ago

Well it wont be long now till someone scores on the MSI Big Bang and some Msi graphics . The more I look at that Big Bang thats a lot of real estate for some video power and a great looking board and whoever wins it I would like to see how it turns out in a the winners personal reveiw. So good luck to everyone!

The Mainboard and SLI setup are really cool. There is a tremendous overclocking potential with this gear, but even at stock speeds, this will be a smokin' fast way to go. The reviews on all of this gear are stellar.

Good luck to you too, amdcrankitup.
And a HDD/SSD, PSU, ODD, and a Case lol

While those cards would be a nice upgrade, there are too many extra parts to make a completely new system out of this... and money is pretty tight right now :-(

That MB would collect dust and my GTX295 would become a really expensive Physx card lol (assuming I could even use it with 2 460s in there at the same time!)

realneil 4 years ago
my GTX295 would become a really expensive Physx card lol
Two 460's together supposedly handle PhysX handily. Sell that monster 295 to buy other parts for the new build. (*you know, after you win!*)

sackyhack 4 years ago

I already bought an i5 760 and a gtx 470 for my new build. But I guess I could sell them and go with an i7 if I win, it'd be worth it. Plus not having to pay for a motherboard would make the little extra $$ for an i7 easier to give up. This is definitely some nice stuff here. Would a 650W PSU be enough for 2 460s?

realneil 4 years ago

@Hackysack: About your question concerning your power supply.

The Mfg. recommendations call for more power than that, but in real world use, and considering the way these particular cards sip power, I'd bet that yours will be fine.

Video Card Mfg recommendations always call for far more power than they actually need because of low-quality and under-performing PSU's that have saturated the market.

sackyhack 4 years ago

Yeah I just saw the Guru3D 460 SLI review and they recommend a little under 600W for 2 700MB 460s with both GPUs and CPU at stress.  These MSI ones are 1GB, so mine should be just enough, but I probably want a better one if I plan on overclocking.

realneil 4 years ago
I probably want a better one if I plan on overclocking
I think that it depends on the Quality of the PSU that you have. (better quality= smaller size will work, but only to a point)

I usually use SeaSonic Brand PSU's and never have issues with them. This PC has 3 Hard drives, two 22" monitors, a GTX285 2GB video card, a BluRay and a DVD optical drive and 6 120mm fans in the case. I'm using a 350w SeaSonic Bronze PSU and it's fine.

I lost a Phenom 9950 system to a bad Antec PSU 2 years ago. (CPU, Mainboard, 4GB Memory, and a 500GB HDD) All gone in a puff of smoke.

It learned me good.

digitaldd 4 years ago

I know I won't win but its a great prize or prizes (counting the 10 copies of Metro 2033). Aside from what the video cards and a new mobo could do for your gaming, I couldn't imagine the points you could pull folding on those video cards alone.

imAcpufan 4 years ago

Sweet! Thanks HH...this looks like another great contest. Even a single gtx 460 would be a nice upgrade from my dying 8800gtx...I've had to do the oven "baking" fix twice on it so far.

slugbug 4 years ago

This board is cheaper than some of the competitions offerings and appears to have more Bang for the buck as well.

lifeskills 4 years ago

I love the color scheme on MSi's new boards

rapid1 4 years ago

That is very true slugbug, but MSI often goes above and beyond other manufacturers. There are really some companies who do this on a regular basis so it becomes a norm. This hardware would be an awesome upgrade for me, but I would probably just buy a new CPU, and memory. Then I could take my current desktop move some of the hardware into Sarah's case, take her PC reprocess it for my youngest (who has been using the computer since she was 2 years old, and is now 4) to have her own PC, and build me a new rig around these components. I would probably grab one of those new 6 cores for it.

Good question,......they don't look like they force to hot air out of the case at all.

The cards are said to produce a small amount of heat compared to the 470 and 480 flavors. They use far less power too.

rapid1 4 years ago

Yeah sackyhack I would be more comfortable with 800+ especially for oc'ing. If you are gonna buy one though look around PSU's are something someone always seems to have a deal on. You can often find a solid unit somewhere over 600 to 1100 right in the same price ranges, just make sure you get one from a good OEM.

realneil 4 years ago
I would be more comfortable with 800+ especially for oc'ing.
I wouldn't be,.........any extra power that you have hooked up in that box is wasted if the computer doesn't actually use it or need it, but the power supply is cranking it out anyway.  Also, remember that all of the wasted power that you pull is gonna effect your power bill.

rapid1 4 years ago

Yeah; I am in Arkansas (Bentonville birth place of wally world, right now), We roll out on 2 pilot locations Sunday and Monday. Then I will receive my route we will start pulling outta here starting Tuesday in UPS Sprint trucks (looks like a European delivery truck long and thin). We are doing the entire United states (our Alaska and Hawaii reps are natives though), so I have no idea where I will be, that is other than all over the map for 1.5-2 months.

rapid1 4 years ago

Checking in again. I will be going to Milwaukee in the morning to pick up more trucks then back to Arkansas for final load out. I got my full route state wise today. I will be going to Utah, Texas, Arizona, California, Colorado and hitting single stores all over the place. Oh and realneil on the higher watt psu's some of that is true. On the newer power units though they manage there power in and out much more efficiently. This is especially true on the green power units ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153132 ), they may be a little more, but the psu in a system is actually one of the most important parts period really.

realneil 4 years ago
realneil on the higher watt psu's some of that is true. On the newer power units though they manage there power in and out much more efficiently.
Use a Killowatt meter on a pair of new PSU's to measure their power draw.  (both plugged one at a time into the same Mainboard on a bench) A good 400 will be using less of it than a good 600 or an good 850. If they're rated at a higher wattage then they draw more juice from your wall socket. Period.

I know that newer PSU's are more efficient and my SeaSonic PSU's are all 80 Plus Bronze Certified. This means that they WASTE less of their power generating heat. Heat generation is unnecessary, wasteful, bad for your PC components and you are footing the bill for it. PSU's without the 80+ certification cost more to run and develop much more heat while straining to provide your system with the proper amount of clean power it needs to operate properly.

I used to demand that my power supplies be way oversize in an effort to 'hedge my bet' and provide lots of power for a system, but that's unnecessary and too expensive in these days of everything sucking away at your wallet.

I regard the 80+ bronze certification as mandatory in a PSU these days. The Silver, Gold, and Platinum Units (even MORE efficient) are still priced too high for us normal folks.
the psu in a system is actually one of the most important parts
It's the very most important part as far as I'm concerned.

Drive safely Rapid,......

I learned a lot of PSU's when I bought my 9800 Gt a while back. Luckily for me my 400 Watt power supply puts out a consistent 400, so I can run the GPU on there.

realneil 4 years ago
Hey Neil just a quick check, I got an XtremeGear 700 watt power supply with my new computer purchase, would you approve of such a purchase?
700 is usually overkill unless you're going to use dual GTX480's or burn down City blocks with an inner Plasma-Ray. A good 500 or 550 will power most reasonably configured high end computers as long as you get a high quality PSU to start with. Quality is paramount.

I had an 850 in one of these things and replaced it with a 400 without any issues.

My i7-870 came with a 800w PSU and it's going to be replaced next.

anyone know how a GTX460 stacks up against an ATI HD5850?

acarzt 4 years ago

http://hothardware.com/Reviews/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-460-Debut-ZOTAC-EVGA/

The 5850 is one of the cards it is compared to in one of HH's own reviews.

Check it out and form your own opinion :-)

In my opinion... the 460 ROCKS!

lifeskills 4 years ago

Nice, they look to be pretty even, though probably have a little more overclocking headroom with the 5850. Seems like I have been seeing the 460 all over the place lately, and it looks like a great card. I especially like the water version HH did a reveiw on not too long ago.

EDIT: Nevermind, that was the GTX480

http://hothardware.com/Reviews/EVGA-GTX-480-Hydro-Copper-FTW-Review/

realneil 4 years ago
Nice, they look to be pretty even,
The 5850 is a solid performer, I have one of them. (XSF OC Black Edition) But the GTX card has support for PhysX and CUDA. And that could be relevant in the future of gaming, we just don't know for sure yet. I would go for the added features set that the NVIDIA cards offer just to 'hedge my bet' for the future.

I'd like to see some Fart-Smeller (uh, Smart Feller) release a tweak for Radeon cards to allow for genuine PhysX and CUDA support. Then we could compare them in a level environment.

I've decided to go for a pair of 1GB GTX460's in my next build.

lifeskills 4 years ago

I got an xfx 5850 as well, but not the black edition.  Reason I asked is because I wanted to know which system I will be gaming more on once those puppies are in my house!  =)

What are the advantages of the black edition?  Im looking at another 5850 for crossfire, and The XFX BE is one of the top contenders.  Also the Asus 5850 that we saw here recently in the Eyefinity contest.  Problem is, I don't know if my current 5850 will match those other two in performance.

realneil 4 years ago
What are the advantages of the black edition?
It's an Eyefinity (3 screens) capable card,....and it's overclocked from the factory. I personally don't like screwing around with OC'ing when I don't have to. The fact that so many products offered these days have such stellar performance 'right out of the box' is a big plus for me.
I don't know if my current 5850 will match those other two in performance.
I don't know the answer to that either. I assume that CrossFire works best with identical cards.

Although I'm gonna end up with a GTX-460 SLI setup in one of these boxes, I'll be hanging on to this 5850 card too.

AKwyn 4 years ago

Sweet, I'm in the market for a new video card.

manoy385 4 years ago

Just a tip to whoever wins this. Be sure to leave at least 1 slot spacing between the two Cyclones. I have the Cyclone in SLI now and the top card reaches 90C while playing Metro 2033 because my motherboard doesn't have an extra slot between the two cards and the Cyclone doesn't exhaust the hot air outside the case. The Big Bang-XPower has 6 pci-e slots which makes it perfect for the Cyclone SLI setup since you can put them as far apart as possible with an extra long bridge.

fat78 4 years ago

thats realy high, are you able to change to H2O on these cards.

realneil 4 years ago
thats realy high, are you able to change to H2O on these cards.
Yikes!,.................90 degrees Celsius = 194 degrees Fahrenheit!

I would take one of them out until I came up with a cooler solution. Maybe a fan on the side panel blowing at the top card? All that heat can't be good for the 'Puter.

manoy385 4 years ago

I forgot to mention that I overclocked both cards and that's the reason for the high temps. I actually exchanged one of my Cyclones for the Gigabyte version. The Gigabyte version has two fans which allows it to draw in more air into the tight space between the two cards. I also bought a Silverstone Air Penetrator as a side fan since it is the best at channeling the air into the tight space between the cards. It helped drop the temperature by 10-12C while gaming. It still overheats though when running Furmark. Sad

fat78 4 years ago

i looked at your case and the airflow looks sick. how high did you clock these cards?

manoy385 4 years ago

I have them at 815/2000 without any voltage tweaking. Could probably reach 850-900 core by bumping up the voltage but I don't wanna roast them.

This site has figures for just the cards power usage.

The GTX460 came in at 18w idle and 167 under load. So I was full of Sh***T in my earlier post. (probably not the first time) But this card is one of the lowest power users out there now that still deliver good gaming performance.

manoy385 4 years ago

A quality 600W power supply is probably enough unless you're doing some extreme overclocking. However, most 600W power supplies only come with 2 pcie power connectors and you would have to use those molex to pcie adaptors to attach the second card. 750W would be a safer bet.

Probably should never have brought it up here, and I apologize for that.  I won't discuss this anymore on this board after this,......

The kids are grown, gone, and running amuck in the world. One of them has a history of making the wrong choices and is paying for them now. I'm struggling with the knee-jerk reaction to immediately help him solve his problems, or to let him suffer his own consequences and learn life's lessons. I've decided to let him stew in it. It bothers me, but I can't be a safety net forever.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm proud of all 7 of my kids. They've accomplished many things, and they're ALL very intelligent creatures too. Sadly, sometimes a person's own intelligence can get in the way of productive thought process and that's where problems start. I believe that someone can let things like pride cause you to do things that you know are bloody well stupid. Emotions play an important role in the execution of Dumb-Ass deeds.

I had to learn at a young age to deal with my own scattered thought processes, and I'm just trying to let myself let him do the same.

But it's frustrating,..........

My brother has the 4890 Cyclone and the internal system temps aren't that much higher at all than a rear exhausting 4890.  He has the Antec 200 which has the basic 120mm front intake and rear 120 exhaust, although he does mount the power supply with the intake fan facing upward (Antec 200 has bottom mounted PSU but it has to exhaust holes for the bottom) so that might be helping with the system temps a bit.

The best improvement they did with the new Cyclones is that the masive heatsink doesn't block the SLI/Crossfire connectors anymore.

I don't see two of the Cyclone 460's together being a problem in a good case with adequate cooling in place, but in a case that's not designed so well, (and many of them are out there) the fact that they don't exhaust the heat out of the back of the case may matter.

Optix 4 years ago

A Three Hundred should do just peachy.  I know mine removes a TON of air out the top of the case with the 140mm fan on the low setting.  The fact that I have all of the fan slots filled with after market high CFM/low noise fans doesn't hurt either.

I think I shorted my keyboard after drooling over that motherboard though.  What a monster!  I have been following MSI's offerings ever since they seemed to have stepped up their game to keep up with Gigabyte.  Big Bang, Trinergy...even their budget offerings are pretty sound.  I'm really impressed at the quality of boards for those of us who still have to pay their rent, car payments, grocery bills, etc.

Sorry I'm so late to the party on this one.  Family life is keeping me busy.  I'm a computer geek that likes to sit in one spot for long periods of time (my wife says I may have been a rock in a former life) so keeping up with a 1 and a half year old is hard!

I have an old Athlon setup too. It's an Athlon XP on an MSI K7 nForce 2 motherboard with an MSI FX 5600. I think it still works but it's missing a power supply and a hard drive. It was my first AMD system and it was a beast at gaming.

realneil 4 years ago

The thing about these older Athlon systems that we can't seem to part with (LOL) is that most of them were built during the infamous 'Bad-Caps' time frame. This is what keeps me from using it (although it works fine right now) for something important. It's my second Linux test bed at the moment and it's had a number of distributions installed on it so far. It also has XP on a separate drive.

I did put a 350 watt SeaSonic PSU into it to provide it with good, clean and stable power, and I've got it cooling well with 6 extra fans too. Another consideration here is space. I don't have the room to keep it hooked up all of the time. So it may see a week or two's use when Ubuntu spits out another release, but then it's on the floor, back under a bench again.

I have an old Gigabyte GA-8KNXP mobo in my test rig that's giving me some trouble. It started making a terrible noise, but only intermittently, and I suspected it was the fan on the northbridge acting-up again. I put a drop of oil on the fan's bearing, but that didn't help. Now I suspect it's a bad cap that is whistling at me - and it's pretty loud! It whistles for maybe 10 seconds or so, and then I won't hear it again for a couple of weeks. Funny.

Inspect the board and see what's up. There will be caps that are bulging, leaking or both if you have that problem.

Remember that it could be in the power supply too. They suggest that you try a known good power supply first.

At least I know that They're gonna do the job right. I know what to look for when they're done if I feel the need to check their work out.

Super Dave 4 years ago

There is one aspect of auto service that I still like: the dreaded SERVICE ENGINE SOON or CHECK ENGINE light! Probably most people hate it when this thing lights up, but I actually get a bit excited - serious! I view it as a challenge, and I hope all of you hardware geeks out there have your own personal scan tool! Newer cars (1996+) pretty much diagnose themselves and relay the info to a scan tool, and even if you choose to let someone else fix the problem, at least you will know exactly what's up. This knowledge could possibly save you from being stroked by an unscrupulous mechanic. You don't necessarily need to purchase a tool, either, as there is scanning software available that will run on your laptop. A good investment, IMO!

Optix 4 years ago

Oh you crazy people keeping your old systems.  I can never afford (nor would I really want to ) keep my frankensteined systems.  My current rig is finally the first one that I was able to build using all new parts save the monitor.

It's probably for the best.  We don't have the room with my wife's aging dinosaur Dell taking up part of my Man Room.

Why yes,......... I do have an OBD-II scanner for my cars, but Toyota (in their infinite wisdom) crippled scanners that they don't sell! (the greedy bustards)

So my scanner is good for the '07 Sonata and most of my neighbor's cars too, but I can't use it on the '06 Tacoma 4X4. Knowing in advance exactly what is wrong with your car when you go in to have it fixed is priceless. My neighbors dig it too.

Super Dave 4 years ago
I do have an OBD-II scanner for my cars, but Toyota (in their infinite wisdom) crippled scanners that they don't sell! (the greedy bustards)
Probably your Toyota is running CAN protocol.

The CAN protocol is a popular standard outside of the US automotive industry and is making significant in-roads into the OBD-II market share. By 2008, all vehicles sold in the US will be required to implement CAN, thus eliminating the ambiguity of the existing five signalling protocols. - ripped from Wikipedia

A scan tool or software  that supports OBD II and CAN is the one to get! I really like THIS software.

realneil 4 years ago
Probably your Toyota is running CAN protocol.
Could very well be the case. It's upsetting that my $150.00 portable scanner worked on the '05 Toyota that I had, but not on the '06 model.

I think that they believe somehow that more jobs will go to them and their rip-off prices if they keep us from reading our own codes. My Hyundai dealer's service manager didn't believe that I had such a device (or so he said) and that I already knew that the O2 Sensor on bank two, position 2, was defective and covered under the vehicle's warranty. They wanted 90 bucks to do their own scan and I refused to allow it. I connected my scanner to the car and showed him the codes and the definitions too.

It is a great tool to have and I love to pull it out when I see my neighbors under the hood and scratching their heads. Now when they get a light, they just drive over to my house first.

Many car parts stores will scan your codes for free as well.

Yow! it's exactly what I need, but it's over $600.00 for the base unit and the Toyota and Hyundai add on parts. That's a lot of computer upgrades!

When I'm in a bind and I have to read the truck, I can go to AutoZone and they'll read it for free. This works as long as the truck is running, and being a Toyota, it's never failed to run.

Super Dave 4 years ago
I can go to AutoZone and they'll read it for free.
Auto Zone used to do that here, but last time I asked they declined. Virginia must be friendlier than California!
Virginia must be friendlier than California!
I moved here from Southern California in 2006 and never looked back.

Super Dave 4 years ago

We've had the mildest summer here in So Cal that I can ever remember! I ran my AC for only 2 days in July, and probably only 5 or 6 days in August. That has saved me a bunch of money on my Southern California Edison bill, so if I win this sweepstakes I'm gonna put that money into my new build! What about you, realneil? Are you BUCK$ UP for the build?

realneil 4 years ago
What about you, realneil? Are you BUCK$ UP for the build?
Not yet, unfortunately. I do have a nice little bit of cash coming in November (surprise money) and if I won, I would hold onto everything and build something to really brag about with it then. I wouldn't dream of selling that mainboard once I had it in my home. A $300.00 motherboard is a luxury that I can't afford, and if I had the cash to get one, I'd probably feel really guilty about spending all of that money on myself. (it's like a Jewish guilt complex without the Jewish mother at my shoulder) Ha-Ha!

I don't expect to win, so I know  I'll probably be building something as fast as I can make it go, on my own budget.

An SLI setup with a pair of GTX-460's is just one of my goals. I'd like to be able to add an SSD drive to it as well. A larger screen would be nice. Whatever I end up with will probably be my last hurrah because guys on a fixed retirement income usually don't have a lot to spread around.

I've got an SCT hand held tuner that I use to tune the Mustang, it can also read and clear CELs. I actually had to use it for that, for the first time the other day. Might have an O2 Sensor going bad. Gotta keep an eye on it.

Super Dave 4 years ago
Might have an O2 Sensor going bad. Gotta keep an eye on it.
Concerning O2 sensors  - the sensor itself might be bad, or the heating element in it might be bad (not coming online fast enough). Either way you're going to have to replace the sensor. If the bad O2 sensor happens to be the one AFTER the catalytic converter (CAT monitor) you may have to replace the catalytic converter. Ouch.

acarzt 4 years ago

Ahhhh, i'm not too concerned about it lol

It came on once, I cleared it like a week ago and I haven't heard from it since lol

The code did come from the passenger side o2 sensor after the cat.

If it comes up again, i'm gonna swap the sensors and clear the code and see if it throws it for the other side.

Super Dave 4 years ago

So acarzt, I'm going to ask you the same question I asked realneil: If you win this sweepstakes are you buck$ up for the build? It's going to cost some serious moola to complete this thing!

acarzt 4 years ago

If I win this, those 460s will be replacing my gtx295. And then 1 of 2 things will happen...

I'll either hold on to both the 295 and this board and save up and start building a system out of it... or i'll just sell both and find something useless to spend the money on lol

SOOOOO, someone else needs to win this, so that board does not go to waste lol

Optix 4 years ago

That's pretty much how it would go for me as well.

I'd have to hang onto the board and the cards until I have enough cash for a chip.  I could at least swap out my 5770 for one of the 460's in the interim for a nice little boost but this would make a fine foundation for an upgrade so my wife can have my i3 to replace her P4.

This is a very exciting time for computer nuts.  The tech that is available is incredible.  Budget offerings acting like high end boards of last year and high end boards of this year offering stuff that we used to only dream of.

acarzt   I would,nt be overly concerned with that oxygen sensor code.It is not at all uncommon to get an O2 sensor code because they can be brought on by a number of things. If its intermittent I would,nt go out and buy one right away. Thats whats called a soft code!  When it comes on and stays on thats called a hard code then you need to look at it further. If your not having a drivabilty problem or suffering a noticable loss of fuel mileage then like I say dont be overly concerned. I was in the automotive field for 28 years ,ran an independent service center and worked for GM as a Drive ability tech, primarily onboard computer diagnostics, fuel systems, wiring well pretty much everything and its a common thing to see people throw money at a problem thats not even there.Just keep an eye on it.
Im amazed that you have an OB II scanner  thats cool!!
A person has to have one these days just to cut through all of the BS that some mechanics try to feed you. I need a better one than the one I have if I want to read my Toyota truck. It's lucky that my local AutoZone reads codes for free if I need it. (knocks on wood because he hasn't needed it yet)
A person has to have one these days just to cut through all of the BS that some mechanics try to feed you.
Your right having something like that is very handy and your right there is unfortunatly a lot of mechanics out there that will BS you at a moments notice and me being a former Tech I found myself always having to prove to any potential customers that I was honest and not there to screw them out of their money!!! The problem with a some mechanics is they are trying to make all of their money off of everyone that comes in their door instead of doing the right thing and having a return customer that for life. Then you have the other kind of mechanics that  arent qualified for the job in the first place and is guessing at his repairs at your cost!!!!!!! When that happens then you cant spend your money on your toys. I wont let anyone work on my cars unless Im just sick and not up to the job! Good luck to all of you someone is going to get lucky REAL SOON!!

My civic engine light turned on last week.  I should check those scanners out, because Im constantly THINKING im being scammed by car men, weather I am or not.  If not I will take yalls advice and get it checked at autozone.  Hehe, I have some front axles in my trunk that I need to collect my core charge on anyway.

As for this build,  I would not have the cash to finish it right away, but I could sell my 890fx/1090T/HD5850 combo and probably come out with a legit i7, my question is, since I have 4 2gb skicks of DDr3 already, could I just add two more, or does it have to be tripple channel?

realneil 4 years ago
my question is, since I have 4 2gb skicks of DDr3 already, could I just add two more, or does it have to be tripple channel?
You need sets of three. and they should match. So if you buy two more sticks, just like the other ones, it should work fine. (that's what I would do)

Many think that you should buy them all from the same lot number, or in matched sets, but I'm not so sure. If I was buying all of my RAM at once, I would opt for sets because you can usually get a deal on them anyway.

If you have four already, like lifeskills does then no, just buy two more. For stability's sake they should be just like what you already have.

If you plan to get RAM and don't have it, then a triple channel kit is the way to go. They usually sell for less in three's anyway.

Inspector 4 years ago

ya, i was going to buy new ones either way because i wanted to have 6GB RAM in it and i currently only have 2 1GB sticks.

rapid1 4 years ago

Yeah some cases move a lot some are more constricted. I know my Thermaltake moves air exceptionally well, and directed, my aluminum tower does ok not as good but decently. These cards specifically run considerably cooler from what I've heard as well though.

rapid1 4 years ago

The cards together on that board could be accommodated to depending on your case. You could put one in the top slot and one in the next to last with fan adapters above and below each if you were really worried, and or experienced significant heat issues. The one thing that would really scare me here is if you wanted to OC as then heat becomes a real issue. I will say one thing for certain though on an I7 1366 chipset system it is not really necessary, and it will oc automatically to some extent as well.

I think that the best part of these Video Cards is the performance that they're said to produce while consuming little power and staying cool at the same time. This is  the 'evolution' in the revolution that they bring to the table. They work just as well on any platform, but this mainboard is perfect for overclocking with lots of OC features built right into it. There are multiple PCI-E slots there so you can spread them out a little as you said. This would keep them from 'baking' each other in a crappy case too. Yeah, this is a kick-ass giveaway this time and someone very lucky will have a wonderful start on a newly upgraded PC.

Good Luck to all and don't forget to post about how you all want me to win,.......Heh-Heh!.

lifeskills 4 years ago

I definitely want to win these.  I would evict my AMD platform from my cooler master storm scout, as the 5850 is pretty cramped in there.  One of the things i love about those 460's is that they are small enough to fit in just about anything.

Der Meister 4 years ago

It would be a much better fit inside my Cooler-Master Storm Sniper Case. It's BIG, you could almost park a Buick in there.

rofl well it is a great gathering place. Well I am still in Vegas, and will be doing two stores in Utah (just over the border from Nevada), and 2 in Vegas tomorrow. Then on to California and Arizona tomorrow. As for this give away someone is definitely getting an upgrade. That board is a truly nice piece of work, and the Nividia 460's while not being the top of Nvidia's current platform in SLI will probably outdo there top of the line.

I dont know.  The first time the heatsink was broken and if the fan was running at all, it made a horrible grinding noise.  Sent the card in and they replaced that.  And for this time, I was overclocking it, but not much.  Didn't go past the limits in CCC.  Then when I took it back down to stock speeds I started getting artifacts all over while gaming.  And the card seems to be completely unstable at only 65 degrees.  Tried it in 3 machines.  Gotta love that XFX modders warranty though

No Tom,... they have their very own Physicist on staff,.....

David Saltzberg, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of California, Los Angeles, checks scripts and provides dialogue, math equations, and diagrams used as props.to ensure that it's all correct.

Sheldon actually has a board up during the show and he's working on a real problem that slowly, episode by episode is being solved. Sheldon is always working on a real problem. This has been done since the first season, season 1.

A lot of my 'brainiac' engineer friends at Boeing Space division, and some that are still at Rockwell International have an unhealthy obsession with this show, partly because of it's real math, real theory, and it's real funny.

Or, I just thought they were just trying to make me feel smart because I actually understand them when they talk about Quantum Theory and particle physics.

The Math part I have always had a particular problem with, because I am numerically dyslexic. But I have always had a strange interest in Theory, and applied physics! Kinda more like Kirk than Spock, I don't need to know what the numerical chances are for gettin the green girl, just let me at 'Er ;)

Although I did squeeze my ears every night during bedtime so I can have Spock's ears. It worked, But only on one side!
I just figured you might have been playing at being overly critical.
Too old and tired to play games with people. When I think of play, it's something productive like chasing the missus around some. (she lets me catch up) Or maybe a few rounds of a good shooter.

As far as being critical of anyone, I threw off my "perfect" mantle many years ago and therefore have no room to criticize others.
I did squeeze my ears every night during bedtime so I can have Spock's ears
Ha-Ha! I always liked "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." and the original "Mission Impossible" series. Star Trek was usually too cheesy for me.

Everytime I try to drink any kind of alcoholic beverage even just one apparently my head does,nt like it and I will usually get the worst kind of headache you can imagine usually in just 10 minutes after I drink it!! And its so bad I just decided its not worth it, so I just quit.  Of course I dont want you guys to think I was a drunk just a casual beer drinker.  I guess you would call mine an involuntary intervention LOL.Tongue Tied

The odds of successfully navigating multiple computer sweepstakes is approximately 3720 to 1!

Yeah Amd...sounds like me with my allergies. I used to love having beers down on the beach in Galveston. then it just god bad, to where if I even had half a beer my head would be splitting!  Maybe it is the Japanese in me :P Since they usually develop an intolerance to it later in life. Odd because I am still OK with Sake!

Maybe that is why I spent many years as a bartender, so I can have the fun of watching people get drunk without having to myself.  Plus having a clear mind, I did better in the bar brawls and with the babes Cool
I still want to know what u guys would add to build this rig
>>>>>>>><IF I WERE TO GET LUCKY AND WIN<>>>>>>>>

I would go for the most CPU I could afford first and foremost. This is the most important item to me because of money restrictions and I can only do it just once, so maximum Mhz. is the plan. The mainboard is premium and will do it all right out of the box.

Now, I already have a good case, the CoolerMaster Storm Sniper, and I have an SSD for the OS to reside on,.......and also a few 1TB-HDD's to use as data storage too. I'm good for optical Drives, but would really like a larger screen to use so I can go above 1680X1050 resolution. I could make do with my 8GB of RAM, (using three of them) but would want to buy more to get it up to 12GB as soon as possible. My CPU water cooler would move to this rig for sure.

The supplied Video Cards would be used as is in SLI because they are the BOMB!

realneil 4 years ago

One of my sons is a Network Administrator for a large Insurance company based out of Las Vegas. He's lived there for many years. He gets invited to all of the technology/computer trade shows that go on there. I think that one or two of them in that town are rather large events.

Anyway, my wife, (the English Teacher) needed about 60 USB flash drives for her students to use for storing homework and writing at the High School last year. She had me looking online for the best deal for one or two Gig models. I happened to mention this to my son and he sent us 57 of them, 2, 4, 8, and 16GB drives,......and all of them with different logos printed on them. They were all handed to him at those shows. We had to go through them to clear the demonstration software off of many of them before we could pass them out to the kids.

He says that they also used to give lots of free software out to people randomly.

lifeskills 4 years ago

nothin like a convention for some free stuff.  The problem is usually you dont want it!

^Thats funny realneil.  And thats cool that the school provides that stuff(or in this case, your son).  In Portland right now some schools are so strapped for cash they are cancelling P.E.!

realneil 4 years ago
thats cool that the school provides that stuff
Actually the school is in dire straights and can't afford enough computers/laptops for the kids to use during the day.

My wife has access to one of the two "Laptop Carts" twice a week per class,....and it's not always in the best of shape when they roll it into her room. So we provided the flash drives for the kids to be able to take their work home to work on, or to the county library (limited too) and be able to save it for her to look at on her work PC. It helps to make the technology part work for the kids. They need as much as they can get to prepare them for this crazy world that they've been born into.

I also built three very low end XP desktop machines out of spare parts and old customer's computers and put them into her room for the kids to use. They all have old copies of Office on them. They work. The school almost didn't let her put them in there, but some of the parents raised the roof when the kids told them, and the administration relented. Some of the kids in this very rural part of Virginia don't have a lot of resources at home. People are just scraping by.

lifeskills 4 years ago

Woops, misread that.  I didn't realize that yall were paying for the drives, and not the school.  Thats very generous of you and your wife, also to donate computers.

realneil 4 years ago
Thats very generous of you and your wife
Most teachers donate extra time and money to their kids. They're underpaid and taken for granted many times, in many schools. (like cops and firefighters are)

My wife has had no raise in pay for 4 years, but the cost of living keeps going up. She still cares about the kids though.

She plans trips to the local National Park for her kids and gets shot down by the school/county because of no money to fuel the bus needed to get there. (the destination is 15 miles away mind you,......)

So for her creative writing classes, she has a weekly "Friday Coffee-Shop" where they drink coffee, (decaffeinated only) and eat pastries, and everybody reads the poems and stories that they've written during the week. She pays for everything just to keep it going as a treat for the kids. (can you tell that I'm proud of her?)

I have a feeling that if we ever win the lottery, a large chunk of it will go into that school.

50-80 Frames Per Second is fast. It's smooth,...... I don't think that a person could tell the difference above 100 FPS. 300-500 FPS is astronomical and must have been accomplished on a computer with a Celeron CPU. Wink

acarzt 4 years ago
no i get 50-80 FPS some people get a lot more, they say they get 300-500+... IDK really.
50-80 fps is ideal. If you were getting 300-500fps you would have HORRIBLE screen tearing. No screen has a vertical refresh rate of 300-500hz.

Most LCDs have a vertical refresh rate of about 60-80hz. That means it can properly display up to 60-80fps. Once you go beyong that, the screen get's out of sync and you will see the screen appear to split. This is screen tearing.

This is also why V-sync in games exists. It limits the frame rate to your monitors vertical refresh rate.

Also, your eyes would not be able to detect the difference between 60 and 60,000 fps. As a matter of fact, I believe anything over 20fps the human eye cannot detect the change of frames. The game might be choppy that low... but it all depends on what fps the game was meant to be played at.

fat78 4 years ago

thought it was over 30fps the eye cant detect

It's all her, not me. She's the one who is there for them. The Paper-Load for a high school English teacher is astronomical at best. At times during the year the entire living room is filled with stacks of papers to be graded. I help her sort them out to speed the process, but I'm not up on what she does enough to help her grade them. She spends HOURS at it. Her level of dedication to her job is complete.

Yeah, I help her any way that I can,......but she's the one who is the 'Wazoo' teacher.

realneil 4 years ago
Give us ideas for the next contest
I like the idea of being able to build our own rigs, so the parts that we just tried for were especially tempting to me. Crying

Maybe another contest for parts using AMD based components would be a good plan.

I have a few suggestions too,...see below:

The SSD's,......2 of them for a gnarly RAID set up. (could be smaller drives if budget dictates)

The Ram,.......2 of them to equal 8GB. Designed just for the AMD Hex-Core CPU's.

The CPU  6 core goodness!

The Mainboard NVIDIA SLI ready!

The Video Cards 2 of them for SLI goodness!

The Power Supply is all important in a system!

You know, just a few suggestions to think on. Heh-Heh! (you asked) (any combination of just some of them would be cool too)

You guys know what the really good cases are, and any decent optical drive will work too.

EDIT: I should just shut up. The systems that you give away are always top notch and very desirable too.

lifeskills 4 years ago

Dave do you mean the contest prize or the terms of the contest itself?

I like realneil's idea about ssd's.  These can improve anyone's performance, regardless of platform.

animatortom 4 years ago

How about the RROD contest!

Either Dave or Marco get  one of the ORIGIN PC's "The Big O"  Custom DD tower 29 as a test machine.

Then whoever comes up with the hardest settings that make the PC lock up or cause the Xbox to RROD while playing online, Wins?

Or whoever comes closest with setting suggestion's to make it stutter:P

And maybe the competition prize is provided by Origin PC?

acarzt 4 years ago

How about we are given a budget and people pick their parts through various vendors on the web, and then HH will determine which PC has the best all around performance... and then whoever's rig is picked win's said rig? :-D

Or some concept but all submissions are made private, HH picks their top 3 favorite submissions and then the community votes on them. The winner get's said configured system :-P

Or we could just game it out. lol

We could battle it out in Borderlands lol

acarzt 4 years ago

Of course, the way you guys have been running these things has worked great so far. I like the increased flow in conversation lol

Optix 4 years ago

What about a forum/site scavenger hunt?  EVGA has had a huge success with their annual scavenger hunt and the more traffic in all areas of the forum the better in my books.

Oh, and I'm totally game for a Borderlands shoot out so long as it is in the arena and not a one on one fight with crappy Redemptions.

Gunslinger FTW!

realneil 4 years ago

So maybe you guys are more interested in the way the contest is run this time and I misunderstood at first. Sorry,....

I hate to do this, it's gonna be like shooting myself in the foot (my chances to compete) and I just have the one foot left to stand on now.

BUT:

Have a Folding@Home contest.

Set everyone up that wants to try for it and let them fold@home for a certain time period and see who folds the most.

Now, some of us would need help getting started. I've tried it twice with three different PC's and have yet to be able to turn the work back in once it's done. (Scratches Head)

I don't know if this would be fair to people with slower PC's or not.

Optix 4 years ago

I'm not a big fan of Folding@Home contests with outcomes that are based on total output because it pretty much drops folks who have ATI cards out of the running.

Maybe give everybody one ballot for each day they fold at least one unit (some of us don't want to leave our systems on all day and night either) and then an additional ballot for each unit they fold above a preset limit.

Nvidia based systems will still have a clear cut advantage but it would be a little bit more fair.

realneil 4 years ago
it pretty much drops folks who have ATI cards out of the running

Nvidia based systems will still have a clear cut advantage
I wasn't aware of this when I posted, and this makes it sound like a 'not so good' idea.

Maybe we could have a contest to see who could get a picture of themselves with Angelina Jolie first?

lifeskills 4 years ago

If they are looking for community involvement, then maybe the contest should be based on what we can do tech-wise for our local communities.  Its up to everyone to come up with something interesting and we are all judged based on what we come up with.  ( i know this sounds super vague)

Well if it going to be a competition.

Then How's Aboot a Viral Video contest?Cool

Whoever gets the most hits wins? Maybe incorporate HotHardware in the video without being the main focus, so subliminaly it catches on.

We could use nano-technology so nobody can see it. (and we really don't have to do anything at all because they can't see it!) Wink

How about a Photoshop Contest! It would be a good chance for all of us to learn how it's done, and we could constantly post our Photoshopped images during the contest. I predict it would be a lot of fun, and quite hilarious, too! The only downside is that not everyone has Photoshop.Sad

Inspector 4 years ago

And not everyone had skills for photoshop :), the contest should be based on things anyone can do or at least a wide range of us members :D

Can you tell that I like to shoot bugs? (wheelchair bound, so I have to shoot what I can get to)

These guys are so busy this time of year that you can almost touch them before they fly away. This is in my front yard.

Hey now, Viral videos are kinda like Photos....

Only With Monk ShotsIndifferent

Plus, if we had to post it on You tube then it will get more exposure for HHCool

Kid pics would be cool. Mine are all grown and gone. The youngest being 23, and the oldest is 37 now.

Here's a beetle that was living on a large red fungus attached to a tree stump in the Shenandoah National Forest on their only wheelchair accessible trail.

I think dave ment ideas on the terms to win it, they already got the rig and its at stake! (of not getting a owner) :(

Lol, well what kind of build is it? If it's really high end(better the comp, more players for the match) we can have a game Match to win it. If it's mid-high end we can... Um well , idk be creative :P lol
