FreedomPop Expands to Sprint's 4G LTE Network, Adds A Mobile Hotspot to Product Lineup

FreedomPop is an upstart mobile provider that offers a free smartphone plan featuring unlimited texts, 500MB of data, and 200 minutes of talk time every month, all without a contract. The service also offers refurbished handsets for in some cases hundreds of dollars less than you might expect to pay for a premiere phone.

Now, FreedomPop has added LTE capabilities by expanding to Sprint’s 4G LTE network, which is a big deal for users. "With LTE network coverage reaching critical mass, we are now able to offer our customers the fastest 4G service for free," said FreedomPop CEO Stephen Stokols in a press release. "We're taking our free Internet model to the next level, giving customers unprecedented access to the best mobile network performance available."

Additionally, FreedomPop announced a mobile hotspot that can take advantage of the new LTE expansion, the FreedomPop MiFi 5580 LTE, which offers 500MB of free access. The 5580 features 6-8Mbps down (with peaks as high as 25Mbps), allows users to connect up to 10 devices, and it purports to last 10 hours on a single battery charge. It also has a 1.54-inch OLED display, advanced security features, and GPS over WiFi.

FreedomPop says that it will be introducing more LTE devices this year, including handsets.
